http://lowendmac.com/crews/05/1214.htmlI have been running linux since Slackware 7 came out and used to always be a cheerleader for it and FreeBSD.
But, I tried unbuntu because and was very impressed at what they did to the Debian distribution.
Ubuntu is cool because it can run as a live distro where an enviornment loads up and runs from a temp swap file on the hd, cdrom, and memory.
It works pretty fast and is great for getting into fubared file systems. I never ran linux on a mac or never really messed with a mac enough to be an expert on anything. But, Ubuntu is my distro of choice from now on and I love the apt get, if I want a program I just type in what I want then it downloads and installs it for me. Plus updates for security and that are more often then windows, I am a cheerleader for it now.
Not matter what all of the distros we have today follow after the pioneers. They are either Redhat based, Debian based, or Slackware based then they pile on all of their tweaks along with 3rd party software to create a distro. The differences of the 3 are Slackware very closely emulates a BSD system with its boot setup and how the config files work, Debian uses its own setup made by thousands of volunteers accross the world and is very stable, Redhat was designed to be easier to use but I don't really like this one that much.
