I've located an full size early 80s 650cc that has been converted into a bobber, Stock fork rake, and I dig it! Plus its the only bike in my price range (as in dirt cheep). Its a hard tail now, with almost everything stripped from it. I REALLLLLLLY need something more economical. And don't have the cash for anything with 4 wheels. I want something low slug and cruiser like but most are out of my $1000 price range, or too nice as a first bike. Seller claims its ready to go and just needs a light freshening as it served as his daily rider for 2yrs.

what you takes on this?

Ohh also, Its located in OH and I'm in St Louis MO. Whats the best way to get it?
Plus Any bike savy OH people want to go have a look for me, and Lemme know if I should buy it? Can I trust you wont buy it.. LOL Thanks all!

Unless you ride on nothing but smooth hiways, you're going to hate the hardtail. Also, if the fenders are cut or missing you'll get a lot of spray in your face & on your back. Other than those, I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't love it...

80’s bikes were not that fuel efficient, at least none of the ones I owned. My 81 CB 750 Honda got something like 30, if I remember right and we all know how bad my memory is. So take that with a grain of salt and wait for others to chime in.

As far as transport,
Back of a pickup is the most reliable for a 25+ year old bike.

Ride safe Steve

All i can say is you could find somthing closer, as far as getting it home you will want to bring it home on a trailer. Since this is your first bike i would not recomend riding it that far. And as stated your probaly going to hate the hardtail, especily if you live in st. louis there streets suck. But if you do get it drop me a line and we can go for a cruse togather.

I LOVE being different, I've never owned a stock looking vehicle in my life so a bike like this continues the legacy!

I guess I can post a photo of it, If someone else goes out of the way to locate and buy it out from under me then it was not meant to be...

It's got full fenders, under 20,000 miles, missing all gauges, fork tool bag, two fender side bags with a butt pad (think its safe for a chick to ride back there?) good tire tread, Full lights, horn, and next to my gas guzzling lifted Yukon that bounces all over gods creation, this bike will ride smoother and get WAY better gas millage. I used to ride harescrambles and motoX in my younger days but a brush with death made me hang up my helmet. I want something I can not be afraid to ride in all weather and dump if need be (its not if, its when?)

Ohh and this, "Does want to run at high idle when hot - it will idle back down when you gear it down so this has been more of a nuisance to me than anything else"

I just love that look!

I do not think there is any danger of any one buying this out from under you ..f you like craziness in your life , then drive 800 mile s and pick up what may be more trouble than you want.. I could not tell what the bike was at first I thought it was a 650 honda 4,it is difficult to tell from the photo.. I would not buy it unless it was a honda .. this is because of the part situation ,, this has been cobbled together ,,but the important thing is reliability ,,if you are going to run this bike hard you are making a mistake, you do need a good sprung seat on a hard tail..
If transporting yourself to Ohio and then getting the scooter back to misery think long and hard about this .. You have to want a hardtail we are not the men our great grandfathers were (of course they had little option)
I rode scooters all my life but was injured so bad it is difficult to ride. You are crazy to want to go to Ohio to buy a scooter that you may not like when you ride it..
If a friend of yours knows some close friend or relative with in 25 mile of the scooter this would be in reason ..
The best way to get it is if you have a young friend with a small pick em up truck
Me ??I have an 89 GMC 2 door jimmy and if I wanted some adventuresome trouble I would haul it back inside the Jimmy.
this is not a decision for the normal mind ""foolish""I have done much worse if you are a bit wacky why are you not on the way ,, you could have done this easily on a long week end..
Find a secondary purpose in your trip visit a friend on the way back or the worlds largest ball of twine..
My few friends have begun to think I am normal,, they need to lower the medication dosage???

Other than being illegal, you really want some gauges. At least a speedometer.

Safe for a passenger? I'm hoping that was a joke. Assuming your passenger doesn't fall off, she'll kick you butt once you let her off. That has got to be one masochistic ride as a passenger. I don't even see any foot pegs.

I've owned rigids before. Believe me, your lifted Yukon rides like a Cadillac compared to a rigid. Especially one like this with a short wheelbase.

Not a bad looking bike, but again.. RIGID!!! You do NOT want a Rigid bike unless you have something to prove to the rest of the Harley guys... And since that is not a Harley, you will prove very little to them that you want proven

Seriously, keep looking. This is NOT the bike for you and no you will not transport any girls on that bike. Not more than once anyway. Once winter hits you can buy a bike for nothing. Just wait til the snow flies. Or sell that Yukon of yours and get a nice bike.

I rode in all weather but snow for a number of years and I can tell by one look at that bobber that it will not be a comfy ride. It will likely be hard on your back.

Now on the other hand, it is kind of cool. So, for a hobby cruiser it might be nice. Is that the 4 cylinder Honda 650? (Every bobber should be either a single 500 or a twin IMHO, but that's just me)

Those are definitely Honda wheels but it looks like a 2 cyl to me. Not quite as smooth as the Honda 4 cyls, but still great running motors. I've had (2) Honda 750/4s and (1) 750 (2 cyl) as well as a 550/4 and a 650 (2 cyl) (as well as many other bikes). I think the 550/4 was the smoothest of the 5 of them with the 750/4 being the next smoothest. I actually think the 650 was the choppiest although it might have just been that particular bike.

I would look for something with a softer seat.. like many others have said that will hurt your butt. A lot of show bikes and weekend project bikes are made for just that, if you plant to ride it very far or often you'll be itchin' for a seat with some cushion/spring to it.

Not true, Speedo is not required in Missouri. There inspections are pretty lax when it come to that stuff like you don’t need turn signals, mirrors and so on, but that stright pipe wont fly. But it looks like it has a speedo in the middle anyway.

OK. I wasn't being specific enough. I should have said that most states something to determine your rate of speed. Still, without any gauges, you'd be risking speeding all the time. MO doesn't require turn signals or mirrors either? Indiana is completely the opposite. We require some form of device to determine speed (better? ) as well as turn signals and mirrors although we don't have inspections. If a cop sees a bike without the proper equipment, he can write you up. If you don't see any cops, you're good to go. Some jurisdictions (sp?) have a noise ordinance but there's no actual rule about straight pipes. I've had a number of bikes with large bore drag pipes without many problems. I had a cop stop by the house once and ask if I had a loud bike. I told him that I didn't think it was loud. He said, "OK" and left.

Go to Craigslist and in the page, cars/trucks.

Many cheap cars and trucks to be had.

Your woman will thank you for it.

Man...
That thing makes my back hurt just looking at it.

Looks like a Honda 4.

Personally, I think it'll beat hell out of you.

Nahhh Even though a grand isnt too bad, I think I can get alot more bike for 2-3Gs and not have to worry so much about it, my back, hot chicks falling off...

I hate to say it but I'm thinking about throwing in the towel on the 308 Kit after all these years and trading it or using what I get out of it for a good bike. Thank you everyone for the Advice though. you've been a GREAT help!!

Next time you think a bobber might be a good bike, take a ride as a passenger.

That has got to be the most oil-and-crud-encrusted Honda that I've ever seen.
