ok this problem has been going on for a while and I have no idea why, or how to fix it.

My Cobra XRS9700 Radar detector keeps beeping at the slow rate and lights up 1. If there really is radar ahead it will beep faster and the number will increase. But it's not supposed to just keep beeping for no reason. I tried going into programming and resetting it to the defaults, I tried unplugging it, leaving it unplugged for days etc... nothing seems to fix it.

Has anyone ever had this happen before or have any ideas why it is doing this?

I do have it going through one of those extension pieces so I can plug more then 1 thing in at a time, but I think the problem was there before I got that piece. I also used that piece so that I can hide the wires for it, so I really don't want to go pulling the wire out of the nice little places its tucked in under the molding.

I guess like any electronics it could just go bad right? It's probably 3-5 years old.

thanks

Upgrade!!! http://www.escortradar.com/8500.htm

Best money I ever spent. I speed ALOT, EVERYWHERE. Triple digits on the interstate. This thing is awesome, as long as you aren't ignorant about pop radar, it will warn you WAY in advance.

EDIT: If what you have is a shotgun...my escort is a tank!!!

sounds like you have some local radar background, try changing your settings to city mode, if you need to know how, heres the manual online:
http://www.007radardetector..._xrs_9700_manual.pdf

if that doesnt open, the bottom left corner is the link:

have the manual thanks. I usually switch to city when I leave the highway. You think its ok to leave it on city while on the highways like NJ parkway, turnpike and Rt80 ? I will give that a try when I go back out in a few hrs.

oh and those others mentioned are nice, but well out of my budget right now. I know that spending $300 now is much better then hundreds for 1 or 2 tickets, but well ya can't spend what you don't have.

and what about placement? I have usually put them right in the middle of the windshield, but for some reason i don't recall I put it right behind the rearview mirror (so its hidden kinda). Would that mean that I probably won't catch the radar if it was coming up from behind me?

I sit mine between the dash and the R.V. mirror. im not sure which is better, but usually the "crap" radar is the X-band, there should be a way to turn that band off in the programming, around here I've never seen the po-po use X-band, its usually K,Laser, K-Pop

Changing to city didn't fix the problem.

the band that is beeping constantly is Ka. and I read that is always police radar. I have come across laser only once recently it was being used by the state troopers.

You probably have a defective detector.

Ka doesn't get false readings very often. X band I get all the time, and I think it's used by traffic lights now for car detection. I don't think I've ever come across a false Ka reading. X, definitely. K, some times.

I agree, might be some sort of microwave interferance or some sort of high tec laser security near by.Next time you go for a little drive (a mile or two) see if it goes away.
