NASA landed a satellite on Eros, a large asteroid heading towards Earth in 2001. After studying Eros from orbit for more than a year, NASA's NEAR spacecraft made the first successful landing on the surface of an asteroid. NASA has since discovered that Eros will be in Earth's orbital path on Oct of 2012. When asked why they landed such a device on Eros they replied," We wanted to see if we could in case of a future need to plant explosives on an asteroid to try to prevent a collision with our Earth" It is now believed that NASA didn't want to reveal any news of an asteroid landing because of the panic it might have caused among the population of Earth.
So, will our world come to an end in the year 2012?
There are two obvious camps whenever Ancient Mysteries are debated - those that cite a lack of hard physical evidence, and those that trust their instincts. Prime examples are the pyramids and flood myths. These were global phenomenons in ancient times, and the similarities appear obvious to the layman, which is why so many books on the subjects are published and sold. Serious academics, who went through university adhering to strict scientific principals, will argue that there isn't enough evidence to show that ancient societies were in contact with each other. Flood myths apparantly arose from local flooding, and global pyramids... it's all just a coincidence, they say.
It is as if 100 people witnessed a murder, and knew the murderer personally. The murderer fled. Each witness told their children, who in turn told their children. Amazingly, two generations later, the murderer returns to hand himself in. Hundreds of grandchildren of the original witnesses know who he is and that he is guilty, because of the details they had been told. But he will not be punished, because there is no physical evidence, and no original witnesses.
There is little likelihood of anything surviving the ravages of time unless it was specifically designed to do so. Even today, we are finding that we are unable to contain nuclear waste forever, and settle for a few hundred years of safety ( see here ). Ancient texts like the Dead Sea Scrolls have come to us only through a fluke of circumstances.
In the search for answers I have decided that starting with evidence and then developing theories is the wrong path. There is unlikely to ever be enough definitive evidence, and if there was, scientists and academics are the best qualified to do so. So I have begun with a theory, based on instinct and obviousness, and am now trying to gather enough proof to convince the majority of humans that are sane, regular people. I have little desire to change the opinions of academics, but I have respect for some of their methods and standards - where appropriate I will choose to quote academics over laymen, and as much as possible I will provide verifiable references for anything I find. Which means any mentions of Zacharia Sitchin or Erich von Daniken are unlikely, regardless of how well meaning and intelligent they appear to be.
I also choose not to mention UFOs. I wouldn't be too surprised if we had alien visitors from time to time, but evidence is lacking. And it would be difficult for me to remain a non-fiction author with the number of possibilities they allow. This is just a small portion of my online book, Survive 2012 - a look into possible ways our world might end, and how to survive. Available in bookstores sometime before 2012, fingers-crossed... The Starting Point
In its purest form my theory is based on these assumptions:
* Ancient cultures communicated with each other in some way * Mysterious Elders have appeared from time to time to guide us * Pyramids and mounds had a purpose other than burying royalty * Evolution doesn't generally occur in small stages * Global cataclysms have occurred within the last 12,000 years * Our galactic neighborhood could be more dangerous than is commonly acknowledged
These assumptions are certainly not unique, and many books have been written on each, with perhaps the last being debated less often than the others. The Theory
In One Sentence: Every so often a force from space causes global cataclysms and mass mutations.
* The Anicent Mayan Calendar ends in 2012. We would be very foolish to ignore this warning, a doomsday date that may have been given to the Maya by others * Pole shifts have occurred in the past and will occur again. There is no known terrestial mechanism that can cause pole shifts, so the trigger could well be extra-terrestial. With the universe being the mystery that it is, we should accept that anything is possible. * Mass extinctions and rapid evolution occur at the same time as cataclysms. Rapid evolutionary change can only be achieved via extremely high rates of mutations, and by mutations that are not random. Unicorns and dragons once actually existed, they were mutant strains that didn't survive very long. * Cosmic rays cause mutations. A huge influx of cosmic rays would cause high rates of mutations. Although scientists are unsure about where all the cosmic rays come from, the source might be the same as what powers the pole shifts. * The ancients were aware of the dangers of cosmic rays and cataclysms and encoded information about them into their calendars, myths and monuments. I also believe that pyramids may have been designed as cosmic ray shelters.
All of these topics are, or will be, dealt with in-depth within these pages. Why am I investigating these ideas?
As a human it is not surprising that I like humans. I don't want them to be wiped out. And I prefer them just how they are, as opposed to any mutant strain that might occur. The Mayan end-date is not far off, and if it happens to be the date of the next cataclysm, I would like to help some of us to prepare, and survive.

both I would hope. If one builds a time machine it is basically an unwritten rule that you must do your best to re-enact Back To The Future. Start studying your script now!

I suppose the important question is when you are wiped out by whatever wipes you out, a speeding car, an earthquake, an asteroid, a bomb, etc. What will happen to you then? Usually we all die.

...
*more junk*
Wow that sentence is scientifically ambiguous. Eros will be in Earth's orbital path. What exactly does that mean? Well, more than likely they're trying to convey that it will be ahead of us on our orbit and we would crash into them. But what usually happens with these sorts of objects is that they cross the orbital plane, and the orbits intersect at a single point. And the probability of the two objects both being at the point of intersection at the same time, although non-zero, is unbelievably small.
Nothing to see here folks, more scare mongering.

Some uninformed questions: I don't know about Myan calendars. How does a Calendar end? Aren't they repetitive year to year? If there somehow is an ending is it because thats how far they wrote before the last Myan was dead and no one else could write the Myan Calendar?
It doesn't matter which way I travel... The Vorgons are a few months away, but they won't have anything to demolish because us doing this will hit the big old 'galactic reset button' :
But here's the thing. They push the button on that supercollider, and the universe es'plodes. then, it all comes reversing back to the exact moment they hit the button, and no one notices everything. (Except one lady in Alabama - her apple pie never re-materializes, and she alone knows the truth of what happened...and she notices something sticking out the back of her dress...)
Meanwhile, the scientists look at the pages and pages of form-fed printouts filled of numbers, and then the pc starts blinking: "test results: Stuff smashed together. Released small particles. data collected. Go get some beer."
Then, the scientists all go out for beers. (None of them notice that they now all have tails...)
Same deal with the time machine. I turn the key, spend a week in the past in an instant of time, then I find myself turning the key. Hmmm. nothing happened? and why do I have a tail?!?!?
Just remember, afaik, no 'remote viewer' has seen past 2112.
Probaby because by then, they have discovered that reality is actually

the "end" of the mayan calender in no way means doom of ANY kind. just like the "end" of our clock means nothing, the "end" of our calander means nothing - it just starts over. the mayan calender just happens to be BBIIGG. and amazingly accurate for a bunch of folk banging rocks together. we have the same brain they did. NOTHING about our intelegence has chaanged. we only have MUCH more access to info, education & history. so, we have more to base our guesses on.
and, for the "floods" - there aint enough water in the world.... it shows up in all cultures same reason ghosts do. quick & easy.

Fiero rumor will never be able to go back or forward in time any farther than his time machine has been in existence. Of course if we build multiple time machines then someone could conceivably set up a system that sets in place a series of time machines well into the future making their inevitable existence a reality so that we could use them as long as the knowledge of their existence is in the past. We will never be able to go beyond the limit of when the time machine was created for travel into the past though. Except if an older time machine had been created that no one ever knew about and sometime in the future it was discovered then we could go back to when it was created. Then if we met the Creator of the unknown older time machine we could change the future by setting in motion the creation of more time machines undoing the very existence of the first actually second time machine causing a split in a single timeline creating another physical universe that will of course need to be fueled by dark matter. The dark matter will be ripped through time existing in two universes at once causing yet another string of unaccountable origin. This will all inevitably destabilize and stretch the laws of physics with ever increasing anomalies resulting errors in the system. At some point through more time travel the knowledge of the these problems will be sent back to the past with orders to eliminate Fiero Rumor so as to never create the first time machine. Of course Fiero Rumor will explain to his would be dispatcher from the future he created that he does not need to kiil him. Only the time machine and the actual traveler from the future need be destroyed. Hopefully the addition atomic weight from the existence of the killer from the futures body won't have any lasting effect on our now single universe.

Seriously tho, the mayans didn't say the world would be destroyed, more that it would be the end of way things are and we begin the 'new world'. I suppose that can be interpreted several ways.
I also hear we will be in alignment with the black hole at the center of the galaxy too.

lol - making rules for the impossible, eh? so, the machine will "uninvent" itself as it goes backwards, eh? does that mean the travller de-ages, and will become a baby & evaporate as he goes back? the main key to the machine is of course the "time bubble" which will contain not only the traveller, but the machine itself. and - next: the problem of suddenly having more matter in the universe at the travelled to point. I expect it will be a requirement to "trade" matter, not only move from here to there. which makes your original point valid concern again. how to trade matter with a time that has no time machine?

The way I see it, there's not much I can do about an asteroid hitting Earth and destroying civilization today, tomorrow, or in 2012. I think I'll just continue to live my life the best I can and let nature take it's course. I'm not going to worry about something I have absolutely no control of and can't even vote against it's impact. Nope, not something I'm going to lose any sleep over.
I lose enough sleep just trying to figure out my next move on Fieros.

Well he certainly can't go forward. Didn't you read the first post? There isn't going to be anything left.
Jim
Not necessarily. A large asteroid hit the Earth 65 million years ago. The Earth wasn't destroyed, and life continued, although human civilization would likely be wiped out. If he brought a girlfriend, and enough bacon, they could be the next Adam and Eve.

It would take care of the National Debt, trade imbalances, unemployment and Bin Ladin. I guess it wouldn't all be bad! On the other hand, after paying for years of college and med-school, my daughter would just be finally becoming a financial asset and then boom?

i dont think the humans would be "wiped out" it might be kicked back a bit and the numbers seriously cut down, but with our tech, and such, i dont think it will be completely gone. we have nuclear powerplans that would continue to work with no sunlight, giving us power to continue to produce things to live, and we have foods that will last for nearly ever....
i think it would be more like one of the many sci-fi movies of the earth in shambles and people fighting eachother for food and such, looking for a city that still has power.

Ugh? Yeah I mean, sure right. Or I have no idea who wrote any of that and don't know what you're talking about either. Maybe someone has come back and cleaned up time erasing my memory of this.

The twinkies would survive, and have a long shelf life. But when 5 billion people are fighting over the same twinkies, they wouldn't last long. The problem is, if the asteroid is large enough, it would kick up a lot of dust in the atmosphere. The dust would remain for years. That would kill the lifecycle of the plants, then the animal food chain would collapse, and there wouldn't be enough food to sustain the human race. Not to mention it would be COLD for quite some time.
Sure, if certain people knew (like our government), they could plan for a few hundred or so to survive, put all the food necessary, power generation, and so on. But 99% of the people wouldn't make it.

Yep, it made for quite a few unhappy dinosaurs the last time it happened.

There is mounting evidence that near the end of the last ice age ( 12900 yrs.ago ) a comet or asteroid more than a mile in diameter either impacted the ice sheet or exploded over Northern Canada. This sent the planet back into a shorter ice age know as the (New Drias) that lasted another 800 yrs. This accounts for the Pliocene mega fauna extinctions, the end of the Clovis Culture. It offers an explanation for the Carolina Bays, the elliptical depressions that reach from south Ga. to New England along the Atlantic coastal plain with their long axis pointed to North Western Canada . The impact would have literally blown away the atmosphere over an area and send cubic miles of water arching into the vacuum of space where it would refreeze and return through the atmosphere as ice and sand mixed meteors. This would account for the lack of meteorite fragments associated with the thousands of bays. what is associated with the bays is microscopic spheroids. which is another impact marker.
This is a relatively new theory and is only recently gained some acceptance. The interesting thng is that attempts to discredit the theory seem to add new proof.
The idea that legends contain a degree of historical fact , may explain the Thunder bird, and Feathered Serpent stories across the Americas. Not bad descriptions of a comet.
