I have talked the local Car Club into letting me "practice" setting up websites by doing their first one. They know I have never done one before, and they also know that there is a good chance that they will get what they pay for (doing it for free )

I got a book from the library, and it has helped, but I am afraid that it may be to outdated.

Fist off assume I am doing everything offline, with all the files located on my computer, no online work just yet. I know when the time comes I will have to have the pictures hosted, and I may see if Cliff will let me use PIP (If I remember right he had set it up for multiple websites).

Question 1. How do I get pictures to show up, When I try to get a background all I see is a broken link, kinda the same as when I put up a fake www.blablabla link just to have something there.

Question 2. How are pages divided? For instance, say I want the same type of layout as PFF'S main page, with links on the left, information in the middle, and ads, or polls on the right. What would I do to get that seperated?

Question 3. Where can a person get a good (free) program for a Forum?

Question 4. Cliff can I link to PFF?

Question 5. Cliff can I use PIP? And how would I get it set up to work with the site in question?

Here is the basic start of the page, I went more indepth with a few of the other pages, I didn't set up the links until I had the other page at least halfway, so half are just my bla bla links. Like I said, no pictures, and no real dividers makes it look crappy.

I am proud of myself for actually starting this, I know I have been talking about it for a few years.

thge "easy" way to use web authouring software, like Frontpage - or the endless others. and, some webhosting services even have online web design software.

you design in a "workspace", then - the software converts to HTML, and you upload, usually via FTP to your web server. hand coding is WAY tedious - but - you do get a consistant look throughout most web browsers, being you normally just use the basic HTML formatting cvommands.

You are doing the entire site in Static HTML. Nothing wrong with that, but can add to the complication when it comes to Site Maintenance and management.

Since you are doing everything offline, organize all of your site files as if they would be ONLINE.

Basically, create a folder called "Website". Under that, create a folder called "Images" and then place your index.html in the "Website" folder, and any images in the "Images" folder. The Website folder is your ROOT of the site. When someone types in "www.blablabla.com" they will auto-load the "index.html" file from the root of the website.

When adding an image to the website, you just point it to "/images/imagename.jpg" instead of "http://myveryfirstwebsiteandIdiditallonmyown.com/images/imagename.jpg".

The browser will know where to look based on the "/images/" in the picture location. This works for backgrounds as well.

That should answer Question #1.

Question 2. How are pages divided? For instance, say I want the same type of layout as PFF'S main page, with links on the left, information in the middle, and ads, or polls on the right. What would I do to get that seperated?

Those are "Frames". You can have frames that tie everything together to appear as one single page, or you can have frames that are isolated from the rest. In the case of the PFF Main page, I believe that Cliff may be using a CMS to manage the site. CMS=Content Management System. A bit more complex to set up and configure, but a LOT easier to manage and maintain in the long run. It requires specific functionality on the server.
Back to Frames. They add some complication to the management and maintenance of the site.

Question 3. Where can a person get a good (free) program for a Forum?
PHPBB3 is free. Easy to set up and fairly easy to maintain. It is Open Source, and there are numerous mods and addons for it.
http://www.phpbb.org

Question 4. Cliff can I link to PFF?

I do not presume to know Cliff's mind, as this would be a sin... But I have linked to PFF from my site, and not suffered any adverse effects, such as dismemberment, herpes, pregnancy, or banning.

Question 5. Cliff can I use PIP? And how would I get it set up to work with the site in question?

I set PIP up on a site I ran a while back. I still have the site, and the configuration script. The PIP software is pretty straight forward, it just requires a specific configuration file to operate. The config script is nothing more than a "Where do I put the files, what username and password do I need?" type of file.

Again, I do not presume to know Cliff's mind, but I believe I asked him at one point about using it, and he had no issues with it.

For an added bonus: Content Management Systems, such as Joomla are nice looking front-ends.

You can "skin" them using different themes.

Examples: Minnesota Fieros Forever is a CMS managed site. I put this one together. It is not completed yet, but I am hoping to have it finished soon. Just needs images for the top bar.

Then, there is my site. Chalnet which is "complete" if you will, but has not been updated in a while.

For a good view of what PHPBB3 looks like, with some custom tweaks... Plan B MN (Improv Group). Try refreshing the page a few times and watch the top image. We had some fun with a randomizer.

LOL I got to Prince and then peanuts, and decided that was enough. I like it, I have been there before, but never even paid attention to the header.

Don't have much time but:
YABB (yet another bulliten board). Endless mods & configurations available.
1st Page (for HTML). Use "Expert" mode for tabbed simplicity. Forget front page & all the other WYSIWYGs. They're CRAP, unless you don't care what your website looks like in different browsers & different screen resolutions.
WebMonkey. LOADS of info on how to create a web page.
I'll post links later if you can't find them.

Set up Joomla.
Template driven. 100s of free ones available or add your graphics to an existing one.
Simple to install plugins, including forums, calendars, stores, galleries, etc etc. Pretty much anything.
Can be installed by a novice and looks professional out of the box (so to speak)
Best of all, IT'S FREE!

One way to figure out how to code stuff for your website is to go to a website that has a feature you like, right-click on an open spot, and click on "view source". It'll open a text file showing the code for the website.

Also, I agree with Synthesis. Make a folder named "Website", and put all the website files in it. Organization is key to a well-functioning website. Organize the fles on your computer exactly how they'll be organized on the server. That way, updating the web server will be as simple as copying your "Website" folder over.

There are two ways to organize stuff on a web page: frames and tables. Everybody has their own personal preference. For example, I hate frames... not just because they're a pain to code, but because they can also be frustrating for the viewer.

To put an image in a web page, you need to use the "img" command, for example

<img src="folder/file.jpg">

For your background image, you use the "background" tag in the "body" command, for example

<body background="folder/file.jpg">

It looks like your other questions have been answered pretty well.

I agree with the funny talking Australian bloke.

Go with one of the man FREE CMS Content Management Systems out there.
Joomla is an excellent one for community websites. Wordpress is a good one for Blogs. I use it for nekkidman.com There are
dozens of good free CMS's out there and almost all of them have forum software to match.
