I watch most of my anime on my computer (with the audio hooked up through the surround sound stereo and video to my 26" TV), and something has been bothering me for, well, years: Is there a way to change, in a video file, which audio and subtitle stream the player will default to? Usually when I load a file, it uses the English audio and english subtitles. Usually I watch it in Japanese audio with english subtitles, and occasionally English audio with no subtitles. Most of the files are mkv files, some avi (and a few others).

Or if there's a video player that can be programmed to do this, I could try that out, too. I usually watch everything with The Core Media Player.

It's easier to watch them off the computer because otherwise, I'd be swapping DVD's in and out constantly

lol I think I'm seriously missing the point, because my first response would be Audio Set Up on the main menu disk...

No, seriously... for some reason DVD's are set up to default to English Audio, Subs On.. (yes, that's totally stupid)

If you are talking about MKV files, I do believe you can set your preferences in whatever program you use to play them with to default to Japanese audio w/ english subs... let me go check what program I use and see if I can find it..

Well Inter Video Win DVD will allow you to set up the default audio language, and the default sub title language... but I'm not sure if it will play mkv's.. I think it does..

I haven't actually done that to see if it actually works, because most of mine are avi's and only have japanese audio w/ english subs, there's no changing that...

shrug... maybe somebody else will have a better idea for you...

Wow... I guess I'm somewhat missing what you're asking too. If it is a simple file format saved on your computer (like AVI for instance) then you have to watch it however it was coded. If it was recorded in Japanese with English subs (which is most common for downloaded files, raw Japanese second), then you're pretty much stuck with that. If you convert it from your DVD itself then usually it's the same.

As Amethyst said there is a way to change the language for video on InterVideoWin, but if I remember correctly on mine it is to change the region coding (which comes in handy too when you have to just have that anime that just comes out in Japan... ...). I'm all for AVI files Japanese with English subs too, so I usually don't worry about what language it starts at, as long as they're speaking over-exaggerated Japanese

And just for the record, the English dubbed Initial D sucks big time. How dare you have such an abomination? j/k

What he's asking is about dual audio formats. Matroska(.mkv) files and things of that nature. They have soft subs and multiple audio tracks. He wants to know if theres a way to change the default audio and sub settings. I'd like to know how to do that myself.

Try VLC Media Player. It is extremely easy to switch between audio tracks and subtitle tracks.
