other than you never have to change the oil in "oil free" compressor what other differences are there?

I have also noticed that most of the "oil free" ones are less powerful, is this true.

thanks, just curious

Essentially the life of the compressor is the difference. The oil free piston driven units are essentially disposable units.

There are diaphram oil free compressors that will last but those are more specality compressors.

I have an oilless Campbell-Hausfeld 5HP, 30 gal upright. It is a diaphragm type that is over 18 years old and going strong. All I do is turn it on and off and keep the tank drained. I paint with it, run all of my air tools, and can sand and grind, but it can't keep up too well (needs a larger tank). I even run a 150 ft hose to the house to use the nail guns occasionally. It is incredibly loud, though. I'll be getting a 60+ gal 2 stage next time around.

is not a oiled unit better for tools?
I would think the oil in the air would help the tools last longer
oil free is better for painting but you can get a filter/oil trap add on

Question wonder and be wierd
