Well just wanted to see if anyone else has had as bad a Friday as I have. My employer had a workforce reduction today and had to let 9 people go and I was one of them. Sucks big time considering that we had just miscalculated on some bills and ended up over drafting our bank account and had to borrow money to make it to our next pay checks. My wife's job does not pay anywhere near enough to cover our bills so I have to find another job like asap to make sure we still have a place to live after April since that is probably as far as my severance pay will cover the rent for. To top that off we had to go find a used tire to put on my Fiero since I noticed on the way home yesterday the front right tire was loosing its tread. Had to get a used one since we can not spare the money for four new tires that it needs. I can't even say well at least I have my health since I have been sick as a dog this whole last week. Oh well just have ti grab the boot straps and pull until we are back up again I guess. So has any one else had a really lousy Friday this week?
Good luck, man... You sound like you aren't the type to let life get away with kickin' you in the butt...
Hope you are able to kick it right back, and end up better off.
What type of experience do you have (What did you do in your previous job)? There are a lot of FL forum members here, you never know...
Our own spin of Linkedin: Kickin' it "Fiero-Style"
Good luck!

Thanks. I have worked in the Electronics industry since 1989 I have a BSEET (Bachelors of Science in Electronics Engineering and Technology) degree. This last company I worked for did just military avionics work specifically for Blackhawk helicopters but I have worked on a wide range of engineering projects in my time. User00013170 I already have planned to have a completely updated resume done and posted by the end of this weekend so I am not even waiting for Monday to start looking for a new job. Personally I think you have to look at life spit in it's eye and say f you!!! Or else you end up a neurotic wreck waked out on some anti-depressant pills.
I feel for you, I have been laid off before with no notice. I wish I could help, if I hear of anything I will pass it along.
I'm not sure about florida, but here the employer is to give you a two week notice minimum. If notice cannot be provided, pay for those weeks is given (for an indefinite lay-off).

Don't you just hate those "Due to a cost analysis of (fill in the blank), the position of (fill in the blank) has been eliminated." letters. I received one on a Friday afternoon in 1992. I had 30 min to clear out my stuff with the guy I used to supervise instructed to watch every move I made. Even if you get severance, you are eligible for unemployment starting the day of your release (may take a week or 2 to kick in). I had 8 weeks severance plus unemployment for a few months. For the first 8 weeks I had never taken in so much money in my life up to then.
Hold your head up and have a positive attitude and I think you will (as I do) look back as them doing you a favor in the long run. I had been with them for over 13 years. My present job has been over 15 years.

Knock on wood its been 12 years, but you never forget the sting. We were not given any notice, just asked to go into the office and told to pack up.

Here you dont get unemployment until the last check comes for severance. Doesn't mean you don't get the paperwork done ahead of time to be ready just incase.

Every state is different. Here they don't have those rules.

Have you looked at www.careerbuilder.com ? You might luck out and find a job there. You definitely want to sign up for unemployment while you look, every little bit helps and you may even be able to do it online. Try your state's DOL website to see if you can file or even look for a job there. http://www.stateofflorida.c...efault.aspx?tabid=10

Thanks. I really appreciate all the positive posts with very good advice. And yes unemployment is the first thing I am applying for since I know that you can apply online here in Florida. Makes it a lot easier. red88gt thanks it's always nice to know that their are people out their who will offer up prayers for people they don't even know.

As stated above, each state is different. I was in Minnesota at the time. The way it was told to me was that for the 1st 2 weeks I could not collect unemployment because that was considered wages because of no 2 week notice. Severence was considered earned income from before the layoff because it was based on years of service with the company before the layoff. My point was for him to make sure he gets what he can to help him get by. My employer (at the time of termination) told me after the severance pay was over I could apply for unemployment, they lied. I was one who said I would never take money I didn't earn. The way I was let go (1/2 hr notice after 13 years) changed my mind.
The phone company I work for (sounds allot like rint with an SP at the front) laid off 4200 people nationwide today as well, we were told it was some kind of planned thing for allot of companies? We made the cut, but I feel really bad for people that got it like you did, why not warn people that this is coming? Perhaps give some a chance to take early retirement or something.
My brother just emailed me the other day, and they had a Reduction In Force where he works, and he, too, had no idea what was coming....and had about a half hour to empty out his desk. I've been laid off before in a couple of jobs, but always got a two week notice....but was never given any separation pay, due to the fact I hadn't been on the job long at each employer. I'm holding good thoughts for all of you that are in this situation now. I'm one of the lucky ones...it won't happen to me....but I have the feeling that for a lot of people, it's only going to get worse.

Make sure you have an up to date resume on every job finding site out there like Monster. Before I reired I did a lot of hiring from sites like those and you have to keep this in mind, their are a lot more jobs open then you see listed on the sites. A lot of companies simply do not post positions, I seldom did. It's often better to just search the resumes (thats what we paid for) in their data bank. When you post a job, you often get a flood of (time wasting) calls and Emails from unquilified people. So make sure your up to date with that resume and that it looks good. I did lot of miltary contract work, mostly computers, and was forever chasing contracts. Good hunting and good luck.
