is it smoking when it bongs? ok seriously, did it just start this in cold weather? it sounds like something may be heating up and then contracting. might be a lose manifold or part of the exhaust. check the coolant and make sure its not overheating and making a chug, chug noise. ------------------ “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” -Henry Ford

One of the front springs in my old Suburban would settle after it had been driven and would make a loud "BOING". It was most noticeable after doing something to extend the front springs, such as a full throttle standing start.

I am pretty sure it coming from the back of the truck, but because of the metal echo type sound it is making I am not a 100% sure. I was thinking maybe gas tank expanding and contracting - it is pretty big 34 gallon.
2003 gmc sierra 4x2 5 speed - that is right 5 speed.

is it a 2 pc deive shaft? i had an 03 xtreme 4.3 5 speed (thats right 5 speed) i herd that they had problems with the carrier bearings on the 2 pc driveshaft, and check out the rear tranny mount
My 2001 Silverado did it also. Kind of a "klink" sound. I bought it new and sold it with 115,000 miles on it and it did it from new until I sold it. Never did have it looked at. It did not do it all the time, but I didn't worry about it. I drive a 2006 Ford E250 for my work and it does more of a "thunk" sound sometimes.

May have something going on with the tank vapor system. It may be pulling a slight vacuum on the tank, slightly collapsing it, then when you stop, air bleeds back in and the tank pops out where it was. Just a guess, you understand. Does it do it after a long time or anytime you crank it? Be easy to check though. After a time, get someone to kill the engine after you have crawled under to look. You might be able to see or hear where it's coming from. A new gas cap lately? tg
