Let me start off by saying I know enought about computers to be dangerous. I am not "good" with computers by any means

I am replacing my old Netgear WRG614 router with a newer Netgear Rangemax WPN824. I have cable internet service (Comcast). I was hoping that I would simply unplug to old router and plug in the new one----however it isn't being that easy. Now that I am gonig through the setup process the manual says I need or may need:
Host and Domain Names
Internet Login Name and Password (frequently an email address and password)
Domain Name Server (DNS) Addresses
Fixed or Static IP Address

How do I find this information when I am logged in with my currnet router? If I log into Comcast's site can I get the info from there?

I am able to set everything up to where my desktop and laptop link to the router (wired and wireless) however it does not appear that the router connects to anything.

Your router should pull (DHCP) an ip from comcast, it will also pull DNS addresses.
You will probably want to set the DHCP to give you addresses each time you turn on the pc.
If you do not have to put in a password when you connect to the Internet now you probably don't need one.

Do you know how to access the setup information in your old router? If you can you should be able to log into your old router and retrieve the information otherwise if you get on the net and login to the comcast site - the go to the help forums there is a forum dedicated to home networking - you should be able to find your answer there.

Good luck

You will more then likely have to call Comcast and give them the new router MAC address so that they can add it to their config. Without that chances are that it won't work.

Also if you don't remember your password they will reset it for you. I don't think they have an online source to get your password. Most of the time it's the same as your email password or at lest the ISP's I've used were. Just an idea.

Arround here if you have comcast there are no passwords or usernames. What happens is that when you are switching to a router from a direct computer to modem connection, or switching routers you have to unplug the power from the modem. Then plug it back in, let it boot up then plug in your new router. The modem requires a reboot before it will assign a DHCP address to a new router.

Comcast dosen't care about the router's mac address. They just need the modem's mac address which dosen't change when you replace the router.

Netgear comes with a setup CD. it has a fine step-by-step. but, as mentioned - comcast is an easy saetup - and, yes - it usually is a matter of just swapping the routers.

I am not familiar with that exact model, but is it a modem/router (which I think is rare for cable anyway) or just a router?

If it's just a router, just use the set-up CD that came with it. Basically, you just plug it in and it will work. If you want to configure it, that is an entirely different story.
