Probably because the "Bandit" TA was the best selling model Firebird/TA ever. And love 'em or hate 'em the screaming chicken is as iconic as bumblebee stripes on Mopars or racing stripes on Chevys and Fords

But Yes, the GTO is done for now. It is my opinion that if they had called it ANYTHING ELSE, it would have sold quite well (and leave the Holden body panels on it!). The car itself reviewed well in all of the publications that I saw, and when I test drove one, (6.0 LS2, 400 HP T56 trans), it would MOVE. It handled like a much smaller car, a very taut suspension, yet carried itself like the big car that it is. 60 mph in 6th gear is 1500 rpm, so fuel economy wasn't as bad as you might think (mid 20-s).

If you don't mind used, you can get a GTO for VERY reasonable, and they are VERY nice cars.

I seem to be the only one that remembers that Pontiac only planned to run the GTO for @3 years as a low production car.

It also seems to me that in most of the cases I'm aware of, where a concept car was brought to market, the company involved had a runaway hit on their hands, unless it was too expensive to produce, such as the case with the Plymouth Prowler (everybody wanted one, they just couldn't afford 'em, plus the engine choice was wrong for the type of car, IMHO). Look at GM's experience with the Mako Shark, which GM produced in a modified form as the late 60's thru early 80's Corvette.

EDIT: I really hope Mopar doesn't pull some kind of engineering/production boner (such as gave our cars the rep for being firetraps) that invites unfortunate comparisons to the last "Challenger" that was launched (talking NASA here).

Hopefully Mopar can make a go of it without jumping back into bed with an overseas company. I'd much rather see GM or Ford buy them, before we haveto suffer through a slew of FWD cars again.

You forgot the Viper....probably the most successful concept to production car.

or if you want even more power, go to one of the new Roush or Saleen models

I just had to add:

"View from the cheap seats" originated from an expression of when your at an MLB or an American Football game. The cheap seats are the raised sections of stadiums where you can buy a ticket for $6 to 10 bux, and see planes flying better then the field of play below.
