Just wonder what others are thinking. Lately I have been noticing some really stupid things being put on the forums, the Net, Ebay, TV.
Have we become so dependant on instant gratification that we have to be on this thing 24/7?
I myself never really was a Idiot Net junky until my stroke put me in a position that made it just about impossible to do what I had done before.
OK, now I know this can be a good tool for those of us that use it that way, but to sell a extreme French fry on Ebay, or just to try and get your face on. I think somehow this is bad.
What ever happened to going out to meet people in person?
Going to the library?
Hunting down parts on the phone at bone yards?
Talk amongst yourselves.

I have always wondered about people's apparent entitlement to FREEBIES from the 'Net.
It used to be that you had to BUY things that we now expect to be free--maps, books, instruction manuals, etc, etc. Now, someone can just Google something and assume that the rare manual for the gadget that they bought will be available for free online.
Same with software--one either had to write it themselves, or go to the store and buy it, no matter how simple the program is. Now, people Google a utility and expect it to be FREE and feel further entitled to share it with the world, also for free!

i'd rather see someone try to sell an extreme french fry than see my email filled with penis enlargement spam.....but the thing about the net is that you only get to see that specific portion of their lives, because when they're not on the net, they're miles away from you...so who's to say that you're seeing the majority of their time spent, rather than a small insignificant window of their lives ? and if you are on long enough to know the difference, maybe they're not the only ones that spend too much time in front of a screen lol.
as for parts, if you can find a part on the net, with the help of people that work on the same car as you everyday, rather than some generic parts department drone who thinks an exhaust donut is made of fart, dough, and jelly, what would you do?

If you look almost all "free" internet items are not free. If you download something from a site and dont pay for it I bet they have advertisements on the website that pay for your "right" to down load the file. Back 10 years ago the internet was all about sharing. Stuff was harder to find but people were about sharing. Now its worse than TV. I have an always on connection at home and at work so I have access anytime I want. I dont have to log into anything and its unlimited. Back in the day we only had so many hours online then you had to pay extra. The internet is a double edge sword, good and bad. I found my current job on the internet and if it wasnt for PFF I would probably be driving a beat up camaro now. But I have lost countless hours to the web, I have been thinking for a while now its time to take a break. Turn off the computer and TV. Find something else to do, fix the car, help the wife in the garden, heck I can put a lot of things on that list.

people are endlessly creative, and the 'net gives a HUGE outlet for that. even here on PFF - there are amazing ideas popping up all the time - to improve on a car that was discontinued last century.
and to the comment about the expectation of "free" stuff on the 'net: there are many who beleive the thought of hoarding an "idea", or information to be a sin against the betterment of mankind. obviously this goes 100% against capitilism & intelectual properties laws. after all - how else is a smart person supposed to get rich?

That's called open source. For some people it's all about the science, and as you said, the betterment of mankind, not making money
Even Micro$oft has some open source projects. Don't call me a commie, please. I am all for making money, competition and the free market. But for some odd reason, this open source thing is taking off. I even work for free on some OSS projects, why? Because to me it's a hobby (once a career) and although out of the profession for a while I still enjoy writing software.

Most of that stuff is in the past, or is on the way out. Will there be public libraries 20 years from now? Probably not in the way you see them today, at least. Paper is Soooo "20th century".
It's "progress". Mainstream media culture---> It's more important to be "famous" then to make a difference. Be the best consumer you can be, get the best gadgets, create the best online pages that you can, dress your avatar in the best brand name clothes...make sure when you google yourself, you come up with great links...
I know not everyone out there is shallow, but sometimes it's hard to find the good stuff through all the junk out there on the 'net.
The Net is a great tool, and I see big things on the horizon, they just don't get as much publicity as the "MySpaces". At least (for now at least) you can fairly easily get your own nook on the netherscape and put up your lemonade stand or art gallery or whatever. It sure as heck makes it easy to share ideas, projects, whatever among people all across the globe.

There are just as much stupid crap to deal with of the net. The net is just concentrated super fast life. I use it to make a living, research, entertainment and a time saving way to keep up with people without spending time on the phone. With out the internet I would actually have less time to do what I want(and less money).
Maybe the way you use it like all things is what life is about. You mentioned that Extreme French Fry. Well I bought that silly bugger and had several hits on items I sell and I have a tentative agreement for a sale because I bought the fry and people wanted to know what crazy Jack would buy a fry. I am still waiting for PAypal to clear though. Point is there is a way to use or exploit any situation.
