I was at work at a place and somebody played a ring tone and ask me if I could hear it. I said, yeah! It was a high pitch sound. The guy said he couldn't hear it.
Then he preceded to tell me it was the frequency that people over 30 years old cannot hear, but younger people can. I heard about this on the radio. He said young people are downloading it as a ring tone for school and text messing each other, yet teachers cannot hear it.
I'm 30 years old and I can hear it. I tested it on my wife who is the same age as me and she couldn't hear it.
So if you want to download it as a ring tone or if you want to test to see if you can hear it, click below:
I could only hear it when I cranked the volume up.(btw...I'm 38) However...I've had my hearing tested...and I DO have a mild mid/high frequency hearing loss. More than likely it's attributed to several years competing in "crank it up" car audio competitions.

Well, I'm 41, and I can hear it plan as day, and it is annoying.
I can still "usually" tell when a tube type tv is on, just by walking into a house, and not even hearing the speaker(s), but the 17,000hz the flyback transformer puts out.

39 and can hear it but not clearly. 4 years working on the flightline and loud music has damaged my hearing plus driving with the window down has caused my left hearing to be worse than my right.
Teens with thumper radios wont hear anything by the time their 30, lol. I can hear all the tones...trouble is no cell phone rings loud enough to hear in a very noisy environment, and I cant use vibrate because i usually have so much stuff in my pockets I wouldnt notice that either.
50 years old and my hearing has been damaged through too many years of running heavy equipment and flying in small aircraft. I have no problems hearing it if I turn the volume up a little.

Well, I'm 50, wife is 47, and daughter is 22. I had them both come in the room and I played it. Daughter covered her ears and said "Owwwwww!!!" Wife looked at her like "What?"
Wife and I cannot hear it at all, daughter said "Shut it off!!!!"

try a search here on mosquito. We covered some of this awhile back. Last year some time. In very short... There is a noise used in malls that the ring tone is based on. The ring tone was done when someone realized that teachers etc could not hear it.

Without looking at my screen I can hear the playback start and stop playing too. My ears are ringing now and I'm 48. My son was yelling at me to turn it off.
I thought it was a joke because I played it over and over at higher volume levels and did not hear it. Then my 5 year old comes to the room and asks me to stop it because that noise is bothering him. Even my wife can hear it and she never hears me when I am across the room
