Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy has won the hotly-contested French presidential election, according to early results. The final count gave Mr Sarkozy 53.06%, compared with 46.94% for socialist Segolene Royal, with turnout at 85%. ... Ms Royal is the first woman ever to have made it to the second round of a French presidential election. .... Riot police have fired tear gas at a small group of demonstrators who were protesting in central Paris against Mr Sarkozy's victory. According to the French news agency AFP, a few hundred stone-throwing rioters charged the police in the Place de la Bastille, where 5,000 supporters of Segolene Royal had earlier gathered to hear the results.
The simularities, (aside from the 85% turnout ) are there.

Segolene Royal was almost a PILF. That would be a first. Differences between the French vs USA elections: First, 85% Turnout of voters is WAY better than in the USA. Second, the margin of victory, while fairly close, wasn't nearly as close as the last two presidential elections in the USA. I could go on, but I'm in no mood to be attacked tonight.
PILF. Yeah. Veve la France!

Bill you're not talking about the "youth" riots of a couple of years ago, or the "youths" who rioted and burned cars and motorcycles after the announcement of Sarkozy's win are you?
If you don't think those riots are incited by a certain ethnic group that shall remain nameless you have more wool over your eyes than you accuse the rest of us of having.
On the other hand, they do have a strictly regimented 35 hour work week, and a national (international) aerospace company that is only being kept afloat by the rediculous contributions of the taxpayers of France and Germany. Sounds like a great place doesn't it?
The fact is they have balls enough to go out into the streets and protest which is something America simply does not do. And on the RARE occasions when Americans do protest the majority casts wide dispirsions on their color, sexual preferences, political affiliation, income levels, etc. which largely does nothing help the protestor and does everything to help the oppressor.
One thing you NEVER see is the wealthy or influential actively prostesting, they just make a few calls to their representitives and have new legislation passed.

hmm... Maybe the protesters missed that minor little detail about the person who gets the majority of the votes winning the election. Sounds like a bunch of sore losers to me. Disagreement is fine, but I really don't think not getting your way gives you the right to riot, no matter what country you are in...

Were there riots here when Gore won? ...I mean lost?

Iunno, you think that might be how the system works? Get off your ass and start punching some numbers on a phone instead of a keyboard.

Now now Jakey.... Don't be jealous of me, I'm just going by the rules son. Just because I work half as hard as you doesn't mean you need to get all nasty and leap to conclusions or insults. Speeking of mom, perhaps mommy didnt teach you about the dangers of having too much pride.
And I couldnt help but notice that that was the second outright personal attack I've had to deal with in this thread.. Jeazz... Some people just cant stay OT

Exactly... The rules made the results final, and we, as a country, played the hand the rulebook dealt us.
Whether you agree with the results of that election or not (and please, let's not start that debate again in this thread), this country did not tear itself apart over it. We managed to continue our daily grind, with only a little short-lived whining from a few mediocre actors and musicians looking for a career jumpstart. We're one of the few countries that manages to change its leadership structure (not that there's a lot of difference between any of the politicians we keep electing) without tearing itself apart.
I've been to other countries, and I wouldn't want to live anyplace else but here.
Kiss my ass. Just because you are slave to the machine doesnt mean everyone else is... or has to be.
Thats how our system has pidgeonholed itself to be. Whining over the internet isnt going to do you a bit of good to change it and protesting is only marginally better. If you dont like how the system works, beat them at thier own game or throw a revolution.

I am beating the system at its own game with revolutionary thinking and methods. It seem you dont like how the system works and don't like how I'm using it to my advantage. Here is a suguestion... complain and cry.

of course i think the american idol contestants are more talented than anyone we've had run in the last two elections.
many reasons for this: #1 is because it is a pain in the ash to vote for bush - while it is super stupid simple to vote for sanjaya. in fact, you could repeatedly vote for sanjaya. either way...votefortheworst.com....
