I've had 2 chevettes. I think they all had the 1.6 OHC - except the diesel - which I dont know if any actually hit the road. the chevette was GM's answer to the VW Rabbit.

My buddy had a diesel in the 80's, they did hit the road...........rather slowly...................
Got two Chevettes in my past. Bought an '84 new and drove it for 180,000 plus before selliing it. Seemed like it was going to run forever. It did seem to eat up brakes though. Seems I'd have to change the front pads an awful lot but they were cheap & took me about a haft hour or so to change . Other than that it was great basic transportation. Compared to todays small cars, the gas mileage wasn't all that good. I thought it was geared high & reved a lot at highway speeds. If I remember correctly, best it would do at highway speeds was maybe 22 - 25 mpg. Heck, my Trailblazer gets 25 mpg on the highway thanks tto the overdrive trans & lockup converter. But, please don't ask me about the city mileage !

my first car was a 2 door chevette S..it was a 5 spd..damn that thing was tough..hahah i swapped 3 clutches in it through 2 years,so yeah it was used and abused..man i miss that little POS...tim
I had a 1981 Pontiac 2-dr T1000 (Pontiacs version of the chevette) as my first brand new car. It was basic transportation with no power anything, no A/C, 4-spd. I loved that car! Beat the living crap out of it and it just kept on going.....until I rear ended an old Dodge Duster at about 35mph. The T1000 ended up about 2ft. shorter in the front and was sent off to the big scrap yard in the sky It was replaced with a brand new 4-spd 1985 Turbo Sunbird. Man what a difference in performance..lol.

ahhh the chevette. the car i love to hate. my dad had an 84 chevette 4 door, kinda a medium blue. he drove the piss out of that thing, about 100 miles a day for several years. in 1990 i turned 16 and went to take my drivers test in it. the e brake didn't work and the instuctor wouldn't let me take the test. it was an auto and it took my dad about 4 months to fix it, talk about being impatient! i think my dad ended up hiting a deer with it. he had the head light assemblies drilled into the frame of the car to keep them in place. can't remember what finally killed it, probably had 250-300k miles on the critter. we even took a family vacation in it. i remember thumping my sister in the back seat..you know..the old he touched me...stop it..i'm telling.. good times.
weight HP and torque (certainly not much though) gear ratios
Sorry I didn't answer the question the first time. Weight as I recall was about 2800 lbs and about 3200 lbs in the 4dr hatchback. Power was about 95 hp. It needed the stick shift and the autos, while reliable were anemic. It went pretty well. You can expect in the mid 30's in mpg.
Pop a V8 in there and you have one serious sleeper!!! We used to have a couple back in my home town, ugly as in but with a 350 small block in them, they will eat anything beside them for breakfast.

I would be EXTREMELY surprised if they weighed that much. I'm basing this off the fact that it is smaller than a fiero, has absolutely nothing on or in it, and everything is tiny as heck.
Just looking at it I'd guess it in the sub 2000 lb range. maybe I'll locate a nearby scale and go with the scientific method
edited to add;
I also think it's so light because I saw cars on car-domain with limited engine work (like a mildly warmed 2.8) claiming to run 13's N/A

Had an '84 and a '76. Split the 84 (4 door) and put the "stretch" on it. making A Limo chevette! But it was raggedy and amaturesh conversion. It was on that car that I learned welding. It was a fun car until it split in two!! LOL o the memories.

HO?! OMG!! Tha raw powah!
I drove one of these, once. It was a rental. It was, without a doubt, the most gutless car I have ever driven. (Even worse than a Pinto MPG.) Probably didn't have enough power to pull a greasy string out of a cat's butt.
Of course, I was used to driving a Chevy Monza with a 350, so I may have been a little biased.
