At one motel I was staying at I complained about the room reeking of smoke so they put an Ozone generator in. I was prepared to change rooms thinking that the smoke smell would still be there, but to my delight the room smelled fresh for the two weeks I was in it.
I was able to take my clothes out of the plastic I had them in and not worry about them reeking at work, I want one to use in our house as well as my mother-in-laws because of her wood stove.
I did some searching online for them, but they are just a little bit out of my price range
This is the website for the one the Motel used

Picture for the clicking challenged 1199.00 Ouch
Has anyone used anything like this, I know this model works, but are there different ones that will do the same thing for a fraction of the cost? I watched them set it up, they turned it all the way up, so it would have been running around 8000 mgph according to the website for 60 minutes.

Not the safest things int he world nor does it clean the smell ou.t it only covers it up. If you really want to clean the room get an Ionic cleaner like they have at sharper Image. It will actualy clean the air and produces small amounts of ozone as a bypruduct for that fresh smell. But even that small amount isn't to good for you as they have started to put catalysts on them to change the ozone to oxygen.

There is a diner near my house that uses one and a store at a local farmers market.

I can't go in the diner and everytime I go past the store I hold my breath. For me they generate a very unpleasant scent, and it gives me a headache even if I just walk past the store where they have one.

Back in about 1984, I worked with a group that was attempting to develop a practical ozone generator for use in air and water purification.
Triatomic oxygen is made by passing air through an electrical arc between two highly charged grids. Think "caged lightning."
Our problem was that the grids would burn out pretty quickly.
Yes, the process DOES clean the air, by combining the "extra" oxygen molecule with anything organic that it touches. (oxidation)
The reliability problems were later solved by someone else, and now these devices are in use all over the world.
Sigh.
The city of Orlando, among others, uses ozone to purify tap water. Hence, no chlorine taste. Pool ozonators are on the market that eliminate the need for chlorine in swimming pools.
It's great for removing smoke or urine odors from carpets and drapes.
We also learned that breathing too much of the stuff will give you a wicked headache. Something to do with the formation of formic acid in the lungs, IIRC.
They are mostly expensive because of the limited production numbers, expensive matierals, and "newness."

I sell the Hydro-Zone by Hydro-Force in my carpet cleaning retail store, price is $849.00 list. This is a professional restoration machine that produces Triatomic Oxygen, you need to clear all people, animals, plants and organic life from the area to be treated.

My expierience is that ozone helps displace the smoke in woodwork, fabrics and other surfaces allowing it to be carried away in the air. The general idea is that smoke molecules will "off gas" from walls / surfaces in attempt to create equilibrium, the ozone helps displace it.

Any time that one of my office coworkers quits smoking I deodorize their car with an ozone machine, work very well. One lady spilled milk in her trunk, it stunk badly. We steam cleaned it, still stunk, put the ozone machine in the trunk for an hour, no more smells. It kills off organic sources as well as displacing smoke.

Ozone is not something that I would wnat to be around for any length of time, the MSDS sheet also states to completely ventilate the area prior to allowing people back into the area being treated. High levels for extended periods will cause deterioration in rubber, paint and metal as well as killing you off.

They make real nice elctrostatic filters that are much safer to use, don't produce ozone per se, I don't have any info on those but I'm sure you can find those on your own.

I hear you, I wouldn't use it while I was in the house, even if it was a low setting. I am planning on getting one of the Ionic air purifiers, but I don't know how well they work, seen em on T.V. but not at anybodys house. I don't know about the Ozone machines just covering up the smell, as I said the one in the motel room was used for one hour out of the 2 weeks I was there and the smoke smell did not return, so if it covered it, it did a really good job of it.

The Ozone turns into Oxygen from what I understand, it's allot like a thunderstorm just went through, similar smell for me anyway.

I had a sears unit that I got at a yard sale for $20
it had the O3 grid plus a filter for dust
small ones are better as you really doNOT want alot of O3 inside your home
and only use it to kill a smell not 24/7

they do fail over time to so the less you use it the longer it will last

Question wonder and be wierd
are you kind?

My dad used to sell those things way before those new-fangled ionic purifyers came out.

If you set them right, they do more than just cover up odors, but it takes several weeks to get them set just right. We always set ours too high for some reason, but I am not sure why.

I personally didn't think anything special of them, but my dad swore by them even before he sold them. The "real" ones had cost several thousand $$$ back in the day--I have no idea how much they cost now.

I've used O3 generators before. My father had a rental store and had one that I used often. The O3 generator worked great and really broke down smells. O3 is toxic to us, however my understadning is that O3 has a very short life and quickly breaks back down into O2. This is why instructions for O3 generators saw to use them at night when no one is around.
