Back in about 1984, I worked with a group that was attempting to develop a practical ozone generator for use in air and water purification.
Triatomic oxygen is made by passing air through an electrical arc between two highly charged grids. Think "caged lightning."
Our problem was that the grids would burn out pretty quickly.
Yes, the process DOES clean the air, by combining the "extra" oxygen molecule with anything organic that it touches. (oxidation)
The reliability problems were later solved by someone else, and now these devices are in use all over the world.
Sigh.
The city of Orlando, among others, uses ozone to purify tap water. Hence, no chlorine taste. Pool ozonators are on the market that eliminate the need for chlorine in swimming pools.
It's great for removing smoke or urine odors from carpets and drapes.
We also learned that breathing too much of the stuff will give you a wicked headache. Something to do with the formation of formic acid in the lungs, IIRC.
They are mostly expensive because of the limited production numbers, expensive matierals, and "newness."
