Regardless of getting a fix here, I'd go back to that shop and raise hell with them for using pirated software. If they don't make it right (or heck, even if they do), report them to Microsoft for using pirated software:
From: Microsoft There are three ways to report piracy. Method 1: Email piracy@microsoft.com Method 2: Call the Microsoft Anti-Piracy Hotline at (800) RU-LEGIT. Method 3: Go to the following web page to fill out an online reporting form: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/ReportingUs.mspx
Thanks Chris..that confirms the Key I submitted is the key for this machine. So that means the disc is not right? I thought the discs were all the same, or rather not relevant to a particular machine...Falcon4 gave me a link which cracked the problem on my Desktop, but the link is dead now.(surprise surprise ). Don't really want to have to buy another key...I am also getting the runaround from Sax'n'Dotty's Showpresenter..I paid for the licence for that, and have sent them my details and a request for clearance..and all I get to do is send emails to a fripping machine, that churns out incorrect order numbers...BAH!! And winamp pro is the same..BAH BAH!! If you haven't backed up your programmes etc..DO IT NOW!!! Nick

Just do a phone activation. It takes about 10 minutes. You will call the phone number Microsoft gives you. You will follow the instructions, speak or dial in your product key as directed. It will fail to authenticate and an operator will come on the phone in a moment. They will ask you to repeat your product key then give you a string of numbers to type in. You will then be legit.

That usually works, I think they must have used teh wrong type of XP to "fix" your laptop... lemme check a few things out for ya.
Hold onto your sideburns...
Sounds right. Most shops will not use the customer supplied disc to reload the OS. Sounds like you had a SP2 key and got SP1 or Pro or something. Back in the day when I had my own shop I did not use customer supplied discs. As a Microsoft "authorized service center" I was required to use a "gold" disc provided by M$ to do recoveries (had something to do with the licensing agreement between my shop and M$, don't remember what exactly). Of course I always took the time to make sure I was installing the correct version of the OS and the correct SP for the key on the PC.
When I built systems for clients from scratch I had to create a recovery disc from the "gold" CDs (for Windows 98 and ME) and a recovery partition for Windows XP. Then I would attach the little Microsoft License sticker to the computer (or for 98 provide the license/booklet). The computer serial number and license information was then sent to M$ along with payment for the license (from me - which was passed on to the consumer, plus markup to MSRP). Microsoft then recorded the information to permanently associate that key/license with that particular computer. It was a PIA!
I realize in the "real world" most shops don't quite follow the letter of the M$ law
I always did though, guess I just love punishing myself.
