I'm going to work on getting my a+ certification. I got a study guide today Absolute beginners guide to a+ certification. Has anyone here done it on there own? Every book review I read on the most poplar books gives me one person who thinks its the greatest book and helped them pass ...and then the next will say it was horrible and you should avoid it like the plague. the only one I know sucked was idiots guide...every review said it blew. Anyone out there buy or use any books they would recomend?

if you don't know a lot of the dry factual stuff about PCs and basic networking, you should actually read at least 2 different texts on the subject, with the best being the prepared text from CompTIA itself. i have the Server+ version, and i thought it much better in several ways than the other popular books, like the Passport, Sybex, and Osbourne/Mcgraw-Hill, all of which i've used for different certs.
you can get them from the CompTIA site.

I'm currently enrolled at Techskills getting my CIW certs along with a few others. Just figured I'd chime in and give you a heads up...
I should've started with A+ but as of January 1st they've changed the exam to reflect more current topics. It's really the starting point for IT stuff so just make sure whatever you use, it's geared towards the new exam. I won't be starting until sometime in March but if you'd like I can pass along the info on what they'll be having me study with then.

I'm kinda fortunate...a close friend (20 years) has a pretty good position ..his boss doesn't care who he hires as long as they have certain certifications. He told me this was the best to start with. From what I understand it's hard to get a good job in IT without experience.....you kinda need an in. I'm ready to get out of retail management so I'm hopeing this is something I enjoy. When do you take your exam?
