I was wondering, approximately how many negative/positive ratings do I have? Or how accurate a representation is the ratings bar itself of the number? Only Cliff could say for sure, since he's the only one with the exact numbers, but I disected my own and came up with these numbers:

Out of a total of 151 ratings

6 pixels of the bar are red, and 29 pixels are green. 6 + 29 = 35

6/35 = 17.1 %

29/35 = 82.9 %

taking the total number of ratings, that would make 125 positive ratings, and 25 negative ratings. A few more negatives than I thought, but sounds about right. Of course only Cliff could say how these calculations are.

I've wondered this myself. Past a certain point, it'll probably be impossible to get an acurate number. The number of pixels is just too low. The more ratings you have, the less you know about them.
I know that the precise number of neg/pos has been hidden to reduce arguements over the subject, but part of me wonders if that's really wise.

First off, every time my ratings increase I get paranoid. Did someone like something I said? Or did I offend someone.
But more importantly, isn't the ratings system there mainly to warn a user that they're being a bit of a dick? Complaining about gaining a negative makes about as much sense as complaining because you got caught shoplifting. Guess what, you did something to earn it. The only person you have to blame is yourself. And sure people will shout about how unfair it is for them to be caught breaking the law, but do you really feel sorry for them?
If the point is to encourage people to act responsibly, I feel it would be better for them to instantly and clearly see the results of their actions. Unless you have the base 50, it's pretty well impossible to tell if a new rating is good or bad. So the only times you'll be able to tell if the response is negative is when you start being a complete jerk and piss off half the forums. And in that case, you probably already know.

But that's just my opinion. I'm not going to start yet another 14 page long thread on the subject.

Your theory is correct, but the calculation gets increasingly inaccurate the more ratings you have. As you might notice, the total number of pixels (of the red and green bar) is always 35 pixels (maybe sometimes it's 34 or 36 due to rounding errors). With a total of 150 ratings, that means that one pixel stands for at least 4 ratings. So you can be off by 4 ratings for either color...

And indeed, only I know the exact number. In the distant past, these numbers were displayed but nobody really liked that so they were removed.

And in a not so distant past, I had removed the total number of ratings as well but nobody seemed to like that either.

Other than that, there are now 4 (or 5?) threads about the ratings, so please continue in one of those (preferably the one I'll keep open).
