It's always been my experience that you can't
buy a personality from a catalog full of nonsensible 32kbps MP3s. If you truly want to use the full range of capabilities of your phone, learn about it, get the tools, and make the tones yourself. Don't settle for a "ringtone maker" or similar crap - hell, sometimes even the software specific to *your* phone doesn't even use its full capabilities! But the best thing you can do is look it up, find out what files it expects, how to make them, and make a ringtones out of your favorite songs and sounds. Keep in mind that ringtones are more than just... clips of crappy songs.
As for me, my LG VX-6100 (Verizon, like it matters) is loaded down with the following files (these are directly copied off my phone):
http://www.hostfile.org/imnotokay.mp3 -- My Chemical Romance / I'm Not Okay, condensed down to about 32 seconds including the beginning and end. I'd call this one of my best cuts.
http://www.hostfile.org/mcrtotheend.mp3 - My Chemical Romance / To The End (Rnr Cheryl Mix), a 25 second clip
http://www.hostfile.org/marioalert.mp3 -- MarioAlert, the "you just died" tone from SMB1. Used for texts on occasion.
http://www.hostfile.org/f16takeoff.mp3 -- F-16 Takeoff, just a subtle reminder of how awesome an F-16 is when I need a boost.
http://www.hostfile.org/wtf.mp3 -- What the ****?, from a Fatboy Slim song. Used when I receive text alerts when my server used to go down.
http://www.hostfile.org/saymyname.mp3 -- Say My Name remix, used for particularly annoying people.
http://www.hostfile.org/vnvchrome2.mp3 -- VNV Nation / Chrome, a clip from the beginning of the song. Used as an alarm clock tone at times.
http://www.hostfile.org/vnvchrome1.mp3 -- VNV Nation / Chrome, a clip from the middle of the song. Used as the ringtone for my Army recruiter.
http://www.hostfile.org/blowmeaway.mp3 -- Breaking Benjamin / Blow Me Away (Halo 2 OST), used as a ringtone for a friend of mine that loves Halo.
http://www.hostfile.org/00000008theprodigy.mp3 -- The Prodigy / Spitfire, used as an alarm clock tone. Quite effective.
http://www.hostfile.org/tada.mp3 -- Windows' TADA, the REAL "Tada", not a cheap imitation. Used as my primary text tone.
http://www.hostfile.org/ringin.mp3 -- ringin.wav -- A mother****in' PHONE RING! Used as my primary ringtone.
Hope someone can use some of these... if you don't want to look up your specs, try emailing a small MP3 clip (like the above) to your phone's text messaging address as an attachment. Or google for a ringtone uploader, they're free. The only thing you pay for are network data transfer fees (which are often small).
If you want to get in depth with your phone, search around HowardForums, they've got all sorts of info and tools:
http://www.howardforums.com/Me, personally, I use a modified USB data cable with my phone and BitPim to hack data in and out of my phone, since its data functions were fried only months after I bought it, and Verizon refused to replace or repair (reprogram) it. I hate Verizon for that one small fact, but not too bad. I can't use any data network functions, so there may be some network limitations I'm working around by hacking the data directly into the phone's file system (a 1mb file size limit is all I have).

Good luck, and avoid the urge to FeedYourPhone!
