If you have never heard of this guy you should take a look. Just kinda blows your mind away, and also saddening. Should be a movie or something.

No one is interested in a man with a 170 IQ. Actually it provided some motivation for a movie, "Good Will Hunting".

1944- Died of a cerebral hemorrhage on July 17 at age 46

COuld it be that all of that knowledge caused his head to explode? (Insert scanners vision here)

That would be a tought live to live. I'm glad I am where I am at in life.

This has become a side interest of mine mainly because I do evaluations at a elementary school and we have a very bright young girl in the second grade. Amazingly she was tested and has a IQ of 131. Just amazing.

There are problems that come with being so smart, but yet everyone wishes to be.

I am hoping her head does not explode.

I have an inscribed first edition of his biography by Amy Wallace. I HIGHLY recommend reading the book. Some of his inventions as a child are mind blowing.

I will have to read his biography. His life sounds similar to Nikola Tesla, genuis and died penniless & unknown.

We're all born with certain talents and traits and intelligence, it's what you do with them that makes a difference. Outside influences can make the trip through life easier or more difficult but if the person has a goal, uses what he/she was given and focuses on the goal, well, in Tesla's case, it's a mute point. I'm not very smart, ugly and little to no personality yet, I'm pretty happy. I've always got my Fieros.

Amazingly, a lot of gifted kids don't do well in public schools. Been there, done that. 141 IQ. You are ostracized by the other kids as a geek or bookworm, the teachers don't know what to do with you. The lessons bore you out of your mind.

You develop really bad study habits, if you study what they want you to at all, you're usually reading about subjects that interest you. Even doing that gets you in trouble, I got yelled at by the head librarian in Junior high for taking out a book every day and returning it the next, he wouldn't believe me when I told him I was bringing it back because I was done with it and taking out the next because I was going to read it too. I can read about 500 words a minute, a little faster than the old FedEx commercial guy would talk.

To put it crudely, putting a gifted child in with average kids gives about the same results and problems as if you put an average child in with a population of kids 30 or 40 IQ points below average. Nobody's happy.

True to what you are saying about gifted kids in school. Gifted programs are often very skimpy, while emotional & learning support are becoming more popular. I guess the thinking is that if you are gifted you really dont need any help. But, often gifted children struggle in regular education because, as you mentioned, they learn fast, often are bored, and easily become social misfits.

Makes you wonder though, what would be a better return for your money? Investing in emotional and learning support classes or gifted classes?

To the question way above, intelligence is very much inherited, approx. 60-80%. Whether or not the person will be successful in life is something else.
