I think build quality has more to do with how good the sub will sound, than the shape of the sub does. A square Kicker Solobaric will sound worlds better than a round Jensen sub would. Subs are no different than any other electronic component, in the fact that you get what you pay for.
If you've got some cash to spend, my recommendations would be:
Round sub - JBL "W" series.
Other than round sub - Kicker Solobaric L7 series.
Please note: I've been out the the car audio scene for the past few years, and these were subs that were at the top of their game years ago. Things may be different now.

To reproduce the most accurate sound, round is the way to go. If you are just looking to get loud and/or hit hard, it doesn't matter that much because all you are trying to do is move as much air as possible.

I have square subwoofers and they sound just as good as thier comparitive round counterparts. The only part I was worried about was the overall durability of the shape but they have held up perfectly for over 3 years, and I am not nice to them. I'm not an expert but considering the idea behind a sub is to just move as much air as possible, as long as the shape is stable and it holds up, its preference/application.
as ryan hess said, shape doesn't matter with subwoofers. the frequencies being propogated are so low, thus omnidirectional, and in the small space of a car cabin, cannot negatively impact sound quality by any aurally noticeable amount. they're trading sound power for distortion. a square sub has more surface area, and pushes more air for the same amount of excursion. even were we discussing audiophile-level equipment and trained ears, any road noise effectively mucks up any chance at it really mattering. buy whatever fits, looks good, and sounds good enough when you're rolling. so says my fiancee' the audio engineer.
