Microsoft Revises Vista Licensing to Appease Enthusiasts

Microsoft has given in to pressure from enthusiasts and many in the industry over licensing in Windows Vista. The Redmond-based company has stirred up much confusion and controversy with the language of its Vista retail licensing, but the company is now looking to put all of those fears and concerns to rest.

Previously, the EULA for Vista stated that a customer would be able to "reassign the [Windows Vista] license to another device one time." That language has now been changed to state “You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices.”

Customers are still not able to legally run two machines using the same Windows Vista installation disc, but there is nothing stopping users from removing the operating system from one machine and installing it to another as many times as you'd like. Microsoft's Nick White states:

Our intention behind the original terms was genuinely geared toward combating piracy; however, it’s become clear to us that those original terms were perceived as adversely affecting an important group of customers: PC and hardware enthusiasts. You who comprise the enthusiast market are vital to us for several reasons, not least of all because of the support you’ve provided us throughout the development of Windows Vista. We respect the time and expense you go to in customizing, building and rebuilding your hardware and we heard you that the previous terms were seen as an impediment to that -- it’s for that reason we’ve made this change.

Microsoft is expected to launch Windows Vista for retail customers on January 30, 2007. Prices will range from will range from $199/$99 (full/upgrade) for Vista Home Basic to $399/$259 for Vista Ultimate.

I'll still probably just download it, then after I get sick of how slow and un-customizable it is, ditch it and go back to my (legal) XP Pro + nLite. MS has gone a long way to making half fancy eye candy packaging but the end result is a horrifically dumbed-down OS for the American Idiot. >.<
