I don't know if this car ever made it to USA...it is FWD Transverse engine, 5 speed box.It belongs to a friend, who is going back to the UK. He has offered it to me, because it has lost reverse gear, although all others work perfectly.I have checked the linkage, and there seems to be no visible damage. I would imagine it is an internal problem, maybe the gear selector fork has broken...normally to select reverse, you have to push the gearstick fully to the right, and then down.There is a spring resistance to prevent selecting reverse by mistake, and it seems that that is what has broken. If anybody does know if this is a common failure in these boxes, would like to hear from you!! It is very cheap, and a cabriolet, in excellent condition. Ellie's Ford Fiesta is nearing its sellby date, and this would be ideal...I bought her one before, and she loved it!!( He is only asking me for $500...cheap for a cabriolet here in Spain!!!)

Those Escorts never made it over here, I wish they did, you guys get all the best cars! I would start by pulling the cover from the gearshift to see if maybe the reverse select has a different rod/cable, if that doesnt work, and it is a bad tranny, but its a cheap car, it may be worth it to get a new/used tranny swapped in with a new clutch, then you would know you have many years of trouble free serice ahead.

Well, here it is!! I drove it home, and paid $350!!! 5th and reverse are both gone, and as they are on the same shaft, it is a gearbox internal failure.Found a complete engine and gearbox for $150!!! The rest of the car is immaculate.He also threw in the year's insurance too, because he can't get a refund on it Lucky!! Yes!! Bought a recon gearbox from the wrecker's today...$60!!! unfortunately, a lorry delivering to the construction site opposite backed into it and broke the back light and damaged the bumper...AAAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!!! His company are going to pay for the gearbox too!! They have agreed to pay the repair bill in cash.Will do it myself for around $60..but my friend has a shop, and will give me a legal estimate for the repair..$350..No, I don't feel guilty.This is the 5th time one of my cars has been hit in the last 3 months, and nobody saw the other 4 times.
