My Father 87, who lives about 40 mles north east of Houston, has had a stroke and is being life flighted into Houston as I type. Not sure how severe, but I was speaking with him moments before the ambulance arrived and he was pretty inchorent. About the only thing I could make out was "You better call Ronnie (my brother) and head this way." I am-within the hour. He spent most of last night in the emer room because of bad chest congestion, but they sent him home early Monday morning. Later folks. Prayers appreciated.

Good luck, from another stroke victum.
Had mine Dec. 6th, 04 minor compared to your Dad's from the sound. Just lost my left side mobility, and short term memory, still recovering. If you need any first hand info give me a holler. Today I'm on my way to rehab for my mind, been doing rehab ever since.
Good luck to your dad, and you.

I'll keep him in my payers also. On a personal note, my father had chest pains last week and had to be rushed to the hospital Tuesday night. They gave him a shot of blood thinner in the belly and ran blood tests. They kept him overnight for observation and a stress test the next morning, but found nothing wrong. He is going in for a cathederization (sp?) on Thursday and has been saying he doesn't feel right. He has a history of heart blockages and has had a double bypass already. He is only 70 by the way. Hopefully it was only heart burn and nothing more.

Hope your father is doing better. My father's problem turned out to be a blockage of 60% in one of the rear arteries of his heart, they were able to put a stint in it and he is doing much better now.

My mother in law had quite a few strokes about a year ago, and has done a 180 since then.

I'm in the exact same boat as you but fortunately My father lives just down on the same street. Very stressful time I hope things go well for both of us. Either way as sons we have a responsibility to our fathers and I think we both feel the same way about that.

1st--Thanks all for the prayers. Someone was listening. My Father is still hospitilized, but not nearly the same person he was in Dec when I went down there for Christmas. We don't know what happened, as the neurologist said there was no sign of a stroke. It came on in a matter of hours--whatever it was. No mental focus, but he does recognize all our family. He can carry on a conversation, but it almost immediately spins off into something that happened long ago, and he speaks of that event as if it is what is happenning now. For instance.
He pointed down the hall and asked how far it went and when I replied "A long way", he said, well, we need to bring it back this way about 10 feet. That's too long for this house."

He has no recollection of anything that has happened in the last 3 weeks, but oddly enough, he can recount just about anything from the previous 8+ decades, but does get a little mixed up.

I suspect he had overheard us kids talking about a house we had built decades ago.

He doesn't remember the only helicopter ride he has ever taken. (Mon night)

I'm not at all happy with the hospital staff and told them so in no few or PC words. 3 times, we walked in to find his catheter bag full and the last time he had (of course) felt he had to "go", and swung out of bed and ripped the catherter out. That had to have hurt and resulted in an awful lot of bleeding, so now they have to get that straightened out and healed before he can be moved. (Does this country have any doctors not named Ahmed, Wong, Kim, or Bustamonte?) He can't feed himself, bathe, or go the bathroom. He is extremely weak. Very congested, bordering on pneumonia.

2. We will be packing up in the next 2 weeks, to move down there to help care for him. My oldest sis is still in chemo as an out patient. My brother's wife in Arkansas has various medical problems to deal with, and they are raising their grandson, as the boy's father was killed some years ago. My other sister (60 yrs) has to tend to her husband who suffers from some malady associated with decades of refinery work--probably asbestos. Jane & I are the logical choice, so we talked about it briefly and decided it was good to go. I'm glad to be able to go and do it. Actually, it was her idea, and she's slept on it a couple of nights at my insistence, and is still ready to take it on. I've given my notice via phone at work-tentatively for 15-20 days from Monday. 20 days, because that is his estimated time to release from a rehab program we have him set up for.--assuming he is released from the hospital mid week next. Regardless, we'll be down there the day he is released to come home.I'm not ready to sign him into a home, tho it may come to that if he doesn't improve a little. I'm dreading that day.

3. I'll have to find a job down there but have some leads. Inventory control and order taking for a big Walmart distribution center in New Caney. I take care of our inventory control here, so may have an edge on it.

4. Interet won't be available for awhile, unless I borrow my sister's, so it may be a long spell before yall hear from me once I drive out of San Angelo for the last time.

5. There are some other issues that go along with this, but nothing I could get accross clearly.
Thanks all for your replies, prayers, and concern. I'll check back in tomorrow.

6. Had 2 deer-Fiero encounters on the round trip, but will relate those later.

Don & Jane

I think this will be very good for your Dad. The best therapy I think would be the comfort and familiarity of home coupled with the love of a son (and familiy).

The saddest sentiment you posted. You could have left San Angelo long ago. My sorrows for this burden.
If I remember correctly the Cleveland area was you boyhood home. I remember you posting a few times about your working vacations at the family property. Seemed a labor of love. Here is hoping this new chapter in your life offers you adventure and rejuvenation. May you also find peace, contentment, and be one with the land. East Texas is beautiful wooded land. I still have the visual from your Ruckus post...........

Don, you are a good son to be doing this. You and Janie are probably just what the doctor ordered.
I hope and pray that your dad recovers enough from this to be fully functional again.
Just remember we'll all be here when you need someone to talk to.

Don't forget to take care of yourselves too, cuz you won't be any good to him if you are a mess yourselves.
I don't know what I could do, but if you can think of something just ask!
