On my hard drive, I have a directory located in C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data\upd7bin.

In this directory, is every AVG update that has ever been downloaded since Apr 2004. Some files are 5mb in size. there are 283 files there, taking up 102MB, which is approx 10% of my total hd capacity. That's more space than the Windows operating system itself needed. These are virus definition updates.
Is it supposed to keep every download?
Any chance I could delete them all-or everthing but the most recent-- and the Antivirus still work?
Below is a small portion of the directory. Using the "page down" key, it goes on for 11 pages.

I am running the free version of AVG 7. I just checked and only the most recent update (yesterday) is present on my disk.

This sounds like a question you probably should ask Grisoft. There are links and contact information readily available in the Help tab of the AVG Control Center.

Shud down AVG and move the files. Reboot and see if it updates ok. If it does then you should be able to delete the files. You may want to keep them for a few days.

I will try that, after I finish a few online projects. Worst case, I can uninstall the whole thing, (AVG7) and start afresh with a new install. Surely a new install won't be anywhere close to 100mb.

102MB is 10% of your hard drive? And more space than your Windows installation?

What are you running it on, an MP3 player?

1.2 gb IDE hd. 64 mb ram, 8 mb video memory, w98, pent1 233mz, no usb, no cdw, early SB card, 250W power supply.

I get by. Rock solid.Troublefree since I put it together from used parts in 2001. Only time I'm offline is when I'm at work. Burned out one processor fan about a year ago tho.
I've deleted all but the last 7 of the updates, did a manual update, and ran AVG. No problems. I'm up to over 300mb freespace now. Whoo hoo. Should be good for another year now.

Oh and FAT16!

Hehe... I've actually considered putting together an old-fashioned computer like that, just so I could run my older CPU cycle-based games (from before the days of clock pulse basing) without having to run an extra program to slow the game down to human speeds.

My "smallest" computer right now plays stuff like the original X-COM so fast you can barely tell what's going on. In fact, the video card on my smallest computer has more horsepower than your computer...

... but then again, I'm a hardcore geek. Still trying to earn enough points for that shiny "ubergeek" badge.

Why stop there? Go for broke.

I would bet that NONE of the downloaded updates are necessary to hang on to. Once they've done their deed, they're expendable (much like the male praying mantis).
