Father accused of bloodying 2 children, hitting pregnant wife Robert Franklin, Star Tribune March 31, 2005 BABY0331
Timothy Staten shook, bit and dropped his 2-year-old daughter and threw her into a wall and down a stairway, leaving the child fighting for her life with a fractured skull, bleeding of the brain and facial injuries, authorities in Red Wing, Minn., said Wednesday.
Staten appeared to be in a drug-induced rage when he bloodied the toddler and another child early Tuesday, punched his pregnant wife as many as 100 times, struggled with five police officers, broke a leather restraint and fought with jailers, according to a criminal complaint.
His daughter was in critical condition late Wednesday in St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, where she was taken by air ambulance. An emergency room staff member said initially that the child was expected to live, but Goodhue County Attorney Steve Betcher said Wednesday that she underwent several emergency surgeries and "has been on the verge of death."
Staten, 26, who has a history of drug use and violence, was held in lieu of $1 million bail after he was charged in Goodhue County District with eight counts, including attempted first-degree murder, assault, making terroristic threats and malicious punishment of a child causing great bodily harm.
From interviews with Staten's wife, Jennifer, and police officers, the complaint gave this account:
Timothy Staten began acting strangely after he came home late Monday night, spitting, pounding the floor with his fists and punching the glass out of picture frames.
Jennifer Staten, 25 and eight weeks pregnant, said that when she tried to talk to him, he started punching her, kicked her three times and punched her 4-year-old daughter in the face.
She left the house to call for help, then went back and got her older daughter. A friend, Diana Hansen, went into the house and saw Timothy Staten pick the 2-year-old up from the floor and toss or drop her three times.
When police arrived about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, they found the hysterical mother outside and, inside they found blood on a coffee table and piles of bloody children's clothes. They saw Staten upstairs, sitting on a toilet and shaking the younger child so hard that "[her] head was going back and forth." The child was not crying.
Red Wing police officer Katie Quinn told him to put the child down, but Staten threw the toddler toward the officer, who was unable to catch her. The child hit a wall and landed at the bottom of the stairs.
As Quinn carried the child outside to paramedics, she "could hear a few labored breaths that sounded like there was some liquid in the lungs," the complaint said. The child had injuries to the back of her head, and a large piece of her cheek had been bitten out. Doctors found the skull fracture, brain injury and "numerous recent injuries," including bite marks, on her body.
Names of the two children were not released.
Timothy Staten yelled and swore at police, was zapped with a Taser, held down by several officers, strapped to a backboard and taken by ambulance to jail, where he fought with deputies.
Jennifer Staten told police there were blue pills, what appeared to be marijuana and "a whole bunch of ecstasy in her house, and she wanted it gone," the complaint said.
Timothy Staten served seven months in state prisons in 2002 and 2003 for possessing cocaine and marijuana, punching a police officer and terrorizing a 16-year-old girl whom he forced to have intercourse with him, according to the Corrections Department.

It never fails to amaze me how many people think that their drug habit is ok because they are only hurting themselves.
I know...this guy has LOTS of problems besides the drugs but they are the icing on the cake. A part of the selfishness that may have enabled him to go over the edge.

Yeah, sure, blame the drug and not the AHOLE who is abusing it.
Do you also believe guns kill people?
Sure, Bill. Because as we all know, owning too many guns can cause people to act irrationally, lose control, and hurt themselves or others. Apples and oranges. I've honestly never heard of someone being in a "gun-altered state," or being in a "gun induced rage," or being "high on guns." Perhaps I've just lived a sheltered life. Is that common in Florida?
Let me edit to clarify that in no way am I attempting to excuse the actions of the poor excuse for a man in this story. He certainly is responsible for his actions, but quite obviously his use of illegal drugs influenced his behavior. They should lock him up for a LONG time.

Quite obviously the dirtbag was a dirtbag long before he used illegal drugs... Again, it's not the "illegal drugs" that is at fault here but the ahole who used them. I agree, he needs to be locked up. I'd be willing to bet he should have been locked up years ago regardless of his drug habbit.

People who harm children are considered the lowest of the low in prison. I think the other prisoners will take care of him, they don't take kindly to that kind of villany. His comeupance is long overdue.

I'm sure glad we don't have the death penalty here in MN.
I can rest well at night knowing this poor sick man will get the treatment and rehabilitation that he needs.
You people are so cruel and evil.. who are you to pass judgement on someone. do you live his life? How do you know he's not a racially oppressed person who is desperate for an outlet for his rage. Or he may simply have a chemical dependance which can be cured with treatment.

Okay, the guy kicks you around and slaps your 4 year old, and you do what? Run out of the house for help without your kids? The first thing I would do is to make sure my kids came with me when I ran. If the guy came after me, then he would have to go through me to get to them. That just gets my blood boiling, that poor little kid.

So being racially oppressed, chemically dependant, or otherwise socially challenged excuses brutal attacks on children and and pregnant women? I think not. Nothing justifies that, I don't care how ****ed up his life is/was.
I'll rest easy knowing that, if he is an a state with no death penalty, his fellow inmates will take care of it. He'll at least get some old fashioned prison rehab, which should be enough to straighten out anyone with a brain in their head.

I agree.. She should have had the kids out of the house before even confronting him. LET ALONE LEAVE THE KIDS.

Too bad they had a Taser... otherwise they would have had to use a .38.

Heh, a guy like this....we should deal with in a special way. Lets put him in a small, circular room and get a few of us pissed off Fiero owners (especially me) to go to work on him with a pair of pliers and a pickaxe. Then, we'll tie him up in a basement, slice off his right ear with an old school straight razor blade, force him to eat his own S***, scoop out his intestines with a rusty spoon, and then set ablaze whats left of his %^&^%^# corpse. Yeah, I'm sick and twisted, but thats just my .02 cents... -Ben

Well this guy does need treatment, and a lot physiological work, and definitely shouldn’t be allowed to see his children again...But the article said that he had pot and what looked like E in the house...ya I’m sorry, but pot does not make you violent, In all of the drugies ive known, pot heads are the most docile ever, you get high and you ponder the meaning of the universe not beat your wife. And with E he was more likely to try to **** her and not get it up then beat any one. E give you a euphoric feeling like everything is ok, and your scenes are increased.
These are the actions of a man on PCP or Angle dust, or LSD. With my training I learned to Identify the effects of different drugs on different people, given that some people will act differently then others, there is a basic pattern to cretin types of drugs and PCP defiantly makes people violent, and makes them feel invincible because they don’t feel pain.
I believe it will come out that he was on one of the 3 said drugs... I seriously doubt he was on E and Pot... ya they just make you too mellow/lazy to be violent to anyone.
just my .02$

I am glad I wasn't the cop that saw him throw that kid! I would of kicked his ass just for that! I would of taken the loss of badge and commision for that! I can't stand anyone abusing a helpless child like that. I don't care what drug they are on.

This is clearly attempted murder. I have said for years that attempted murder is the same crime as if he had been successful. The penalty should be death. Period. If this guy goes to jail at all, he'll be out in five years. Drugs or alcahol are not an excuse. That should make no difference.

I don't know what kind of "training" you've had, but angel dust IS PCP, and is NOTHING like LSD.
LSD is more like what you're describing E as - a stronger pot type high.
PCP gives you a "wired" feeling, more like freebase cocaine or "crack", it's new name.
He might have been on meth. He shouldn't have been on anything. Like we used to say in high school - "Reality is for people who can't handle drugs" - or something like that.

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The condition of the Red Wing toddler has been upgraded from critical to serious as she recovers from injuries suffered when she allegedly was thrown down a stairway by her father.
Ty Shay Staten suffered a fractured skull and brain injuries and underwent emergency surgery at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, authorities said.
The 2-year-old's father, Timothy Staten, 26, is being held in lieu of $1 million bail on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault, making terroristic threats and malicious punishment of a child, causing great bodily harm.
According to the criminal complaint, Staten punched his pregnant wife and her 4-year-old daughter early on March 29 while he apparently was high on drugs, shook and bit Ty and threw her down a stairway at a Red Wing police officer who sought to intervene.
A fund has been started to help the girl's family with expenses. Ty's mother, Jennifer, has not been working because she's been at the child's bedside, a Mayo Clinic spokesman said.
Contributions can be sent to the Ty Shay Staten Fund, in care of Diane Bremer, the children's godmother, P.O. Box 6193, Rochester, MN 55903.

Uaana, you have my respect, but......are you serious ? Or being sarcastic ? I am curious. No, I have not walked in his shoes. Then again, a man with no shoes should not do that.
