Short Story:

About 6 years ago, My mom bought me a guitar, one of the all in one pack type of deals, with the guitar, amp, bag, etc. Well, about 4 months ago, I started taking lessons, and around 4 weeks ago, I bought a G&L, and decided to play around with my cheapy one.

I started with a basic black with white pic guard "Strat" Design, built by [Shudder] Silvertone. Yikes. So I wanted a different look and a different sound, so I started expirementing. The color I used was supposed to be for my engine, it's Duplicolor's "Anodized" Paints. With a High metallic silver base coat, and a tinted red clear coat. Hopefully it looks good when it's done.

I had just scuffed the black, shot the silver base coat, and within 3 or 4 passes of the red over coat, the can blew up, so I had to start over again, seeing as how there would have been dark red splotches all over the front of the body, and that is where the pics come in.

This is what I started with after the can exploded on me. Sanded down with a D/A and a block sander.

Nice front and rear shot of the silver base coat, there is primer under that, but I did not take any pics of that.

Here is the first coat of red on top of the silver, keep in mind, the more I shoot, the darker it gets.

And the second coat, as you can see, it's darker, but I wanted it darker, so I shot one more coat of red, but dummy old me, didn't take any pics of that.

more to come. . . .

88 base coupe: Unvailing set for Middle of May, under some serious construction.
86 SE V-6 Turbo 4 speed: SOLD!

Wait. . . Did I just say I can't wait to do more work on my Fiero?. . .what, am I retarded?

Here's where it got interesting. I had real clear coat shot over the whole thing, to make it nice and shiny. But the guy that did it, didn't clean it with silicon/tar remover!. I'll give you one guess what happened. Yup, there were spots all over the back of it where the clear did not stick.

Back to having more fun, I touched up the really bad spots with a little bottle of clear, and sanded, touched up, sanded, touched up, sanded. . . . you get the idea. Until it was smooth again. Then I reshot a bit of red, because my buddy Jason, who was helping me do it, burned a small spot on the back.

Here it is awaiting the second round of clear. The second time, Troy did clean it, but he also put a few runs in it, thankfully, Jason was able to buff them out. That man can do anything with paint.

What the thing looked like when I came home tonight, as I sat and watched "The OC" I put it back together.

Almost there. . . . . . .

And the completed pics of how it turned out, please keep in mind, the pics do not do this paint justice, if MinnGreen chimes in here, I'm sure he will comment on it. . . .

And, of course, I had to get a shot of my starting collection. . .

Hope you enjoyed.

Your work looks about as busy as mine. I've been working on porting my 4.9 heads at work lately, because thats the only thing to do. How the hell do you keep your work area soo clean? Thats amazing! Everyone else always trashes my stuff.....bastards!

The "crappy Guitar" looks pretty good.

And in case you didn't notice, those are my 4.9 heads that went out just 2 days after I shot the pic to have them ported.

O and the "Crappy" Part, was in referance to the brand and what it was before I started.

Also, thank you.

Good job!
You should check into some new knobs.
I went with the "Smoked Chrome UFO's" with mother-of-pearl inlays.

They are solid steel.
Kinda pricey though...........$8.00 each.
They have LOTS of styles.

It could really be the touch to just set an ax off!

Yea, I want some chrome knobs, and a switch cap, but I can't find a style that I am liking right now. I've also got to get new knobs and pickup covers for my G&L, white just isn't looking good on that thing.

looks awesome!. don't knock the silvertone too badly. that's what paul stanley plays (although a custom shop one). here's one i did. basic and cheap. i customized the headstock and made my own logo. crappy, but it was my first attempt.

i can't even play. i just like to build stuff. i'm working on a stressed white tele style with all gold hardware now.

Just click on the little "Pennock's Image Poster" on the bottom of every page, it has instructions with it.

you can make a crappy guitar sound a little better by putting some decent pickups in them... i know that the crappy wood taht silvertone uses will make it sound like crap anyways but pickups can make a WORLD of difference... i wish we still had or 63 SG
