He had about 7 compartments and took several tanks of Helium.

I got to work with the guys that provide the inflatables for the Wilmington parade today. I have new apreciation for the people that do Macy's. (Of which these guys are a couple of.)

Even small ones are a heck of allot of work to fly. And heavy... You'd think with all that gas floating them, they wouldn't be much. We had a stiff breeze and these things wanted to knock you over. I can see why Macy's parade uses the tractors now even with 50 people on a big balloon.

Lighter than air but plenty of mass. They act as a big sail also. Several years ago there was a problem with wind as I recall.

Yes, there were a bunch of people hurt a few years ago during Macy's. I don't remember if anyone died or not. It was a big mess. Wind caught one at an intersection and drove it into the stands as I remember. It wasn't the first year they had trouble but it was probably one of if not the worst.

The whole route that the Macy's parade uses has been reconfigured to make it easier to get around and they now monitor wind speed all along the route, especialy at intersections. All the street lights and traffic controls that used to over hang the roadway are now set up for easy removal for the parade so they can't catch lines.

They have a whole bunch of rules in place, like two tractors per balloon plus all the handlers. The guys I was working with say the tractors have made balloon handling not just safer but allot easier on the handlers since the tractors take the worst of the strain now.

In my opinion, you didn't miss anything.
The Parade just isn't what it used to be.

Macy's has become a thin shadow of what it was. Everything from end to end is an infomercial with some bands thrown in. Acts and bands are so rushed you can't even enjoy them any more.
