Can one take out a Pentium 2 processor and upgrade it to a Pentium 4 processor? If so how much and is it simple to do yourself. Do you recommend backing up hard-drive? What are the steps?

No. You'd have to get a new motherboard too...

You used to be able to get "upgrade processors" which were basically a newer processor mounted on an adapter that fit in your old motherboard. Evergreen Technologies, http://www.evertech.com was one of those companies, but I haven't been able to get to their website.

Here's a review on what you're looking for: http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=37454
It isn't a P4, but it can upgrade your PII to a 766Mhz PIII, IF you can find one. This review is dated from 2001.

It's also usually cheaper to just buy a new motherboard and processor, but it's something to check out.
Depending on how old your motherboard is, you may be able to just buy a PIII and put in it, but you'd have to check compatibility since the wrong board would fry the PIII if it couldn't adjust the voltage accordingly.

Check with the manufacture of the computer and see what the upgrades are.
I had difficulties and I was not able to upgrade on my computer but I was able to add a faster hard drive, RAM and other accessories to speed it up.
It is not like a plug and play option, you may need to change and or update the bios.
Just my .02 cents.

While a P4 won't work....

Some P2 boards will take certain P3 models directly. An example is Dell Optiplex GX1 that would take up to a P3 500.

More ram may help but be aware that many older machines often have limits on how much they will take. I think the Dell above will only take a maximum of 3 256 MG PC100. Other older Dell models will only take 2 sticks of 256. Even if they made 512 ram sticks that would fit, the machine won't see them. Some old machines may only see 128mb or smaller sticks.

Yes you may have to upgrade teh BIOS to upgrade the CPU.

Depending on the machine in question and where you can get parts, it may be cheaper to buy a whole new computer.
