I've always assumed you could, never had a vehicle that burned oil before. I have a '94 C1500 and today my light came on, checked it..and had to add 2 1/2 qts! It's done this two other times in the past 2 years. I check it pretty often ever since the first time....and no, it's not leaking any. Everytime it's happened, it has been a week or two overdue....but I don't think that's too bad, is it? I'll check it right at 3 months and it's fine, then 1-2 weeks later the dipstick is bone-dry. What's wrong w/ my truck??
I'm not 100% sure on this, but from what I understand, you may or may not smell it burning. I think you'll only smell it burning if its burning a lot, but from what you describe it must be burning alot to be bone dry within a week or two.... im scratchin my head on this one with ya Sure its not leakin somewhere? That would be a logical explanation... hmmm...
Since I have yet to own a Car that dosnt burn oil I know the smell well. I can just about tell you what weight the oil is by how it smells when it burns. My favorite saying is when i stop at a gas station I check the Gas and fill the Oil.
Try the pvc valve. Sometimes it will get stuck under constant vaccum and you will only burn oil on the highway or long hauls, you will not see blue smoke or smell it because of the costant speed and the air pushing the smoke and smell back. It is more like ly to happen when you take a heavy load or tow a trailer or boat.
Thanks for the help Ultimatefiero, that could be it. But would it do it everytime, or is it possible that it only gets stuck once in awhile? I do the same type of driving everyday.....mostly in town, a couple miles highway, and I only pull my horsetrailer in the summer.
Check if you have white smoke from the tail pipe in the morning, If it does it could be oil. Replace the pvc valve anyway it is cheap and the only way you can consume oil and not notice it. Lastly make sure the rear main seal is not leaking. If all else fails have someone drive the truck while you follow behind and have them floor it on occasion to see if it does smoke.
