For those of us in the backwoods of the Midwest and latitudes further north, it is showtime for the Aurora Borealis! Right now it is subtle red glow to the NNE.

Edit. It seems to be fading in and out, very faint now, but the glow is there, hopefully it gets brighter!

About an hour ago we had an incredible burst here in central NY - It looked like an aircraft had a huge red floodlight, pointing down from the center of the sky, with streaks going in every direction

like a giant red sunburst - faded after 15 minutes or so.

It was awesome here in Michigan. I live on the Saginaw Bay and it was reflecting and stuff, man it was cool looking.

I was wondering why the sky was gloawing red last night. It was a bright red glow, I even half wondered if the AFB a few miles north of me had some major catastrophe.

Cool.

It seems we had a "burst" as well that lasted about 15 minutes as I went out after my edit and it was pretty much gone. Wish I was further north, but with the continuing solar activity, more is probably due. In any case, it was a nice change.

(After the inital post I was thinking that some neighbor was probably doing an illegal nightime burn, but some others saw it a few miles away as well.)
