I've modeled most of the stock subwoofer box in AutoCAD R14. Nothing too difficult; mostly Boolean operations with rectangular boxes. However, I don't know a good way to get a spherical section on the part of the front of the box that's concave. Mapping it with a mesh is difficult, but I can plot the edges fairly easily. Is there a way to match a sphere to several points in space, the way a circle can be matched to three points in a plane?

I've got to remember to post the solid modeled one I did in ProE at work tomorrow.

I generally try to stick to 2d in AutoCAD. I've got a pretty good sized textbook for autocad though if it's really giving you trouble.

Could you elaborate on what you are trying to do?... I am a visual person and I'm having a tough time seeing what you are tring to do.. maybe post a drawing? Are you just trying to make a face of the enclosure a concaved hemisphere?

Ohh.. just to give you something to work with... an easy way to make a side have a concaved shape is to use the command revsurf(I think that is correct, it's been a while). Basically what it will do is itterate your shape around an axis and connect it, so if you made a line outward 5 units, it would make a flat circle that has a 10 unit diameter. it's a nice tool to use. Simply make an arch at the axis and revsurf it to make a concave shape. Hope this helps.. Also, you will want to mess with the commands surftab1 and surftab2(again, I think, it's been a while) to control how many itterations it does.

Have you ever seen the stock subwoofer box? It has a concave surface that fits over the curve of the wheel house. I'm trying to approximate it with a sphere, but it's trial and error as I don't know what diameter or the location of the center.

Using a surface of revolution would be at least as much trouble, if not more.

Plotting a grid that can be used to define a mesh surface is also difficult.

I don't even think that the surface on the acutal box is even a sphere... just a curved surface that happened to fit the wheel house.

Is there a way of converting from a ProE file to AutoCAD format? I've seen ProE in action and I'd love to learn it. To bad it's like $30,000.

Well, I have not seen a stock sub box, but if you say it's not a perfect circle, then the only way I could see is to do a grid as you had said... unless it's a shape definable with math formulas, I don't see any other way.

I'm not milling the thing out of aluminum. A spherical section should be close enough for what I want to do. It's just a PITA to trial and error my way through it.

Billet sub-box would be cool!

I remembered this being cooler looking.

Pro's only $200 for non-commercial users btw. I can't wait to get Wildfire for Linux.
