"Ned McClurg, GM. McClurg, VP of Engineering for GM's Powertrain Division spent $3 million in "unauthorized" money to develop the GM V-12 back in '99, according to Richard Truett, writing in this week's Automotive News - and it almost cost him his job after 36 years with the company. McClurg had Fritz Indra's advanced engineering crew design and build the 7.5-liter monster V-12 back in '99, when no one cared except for the two high-placed GM executives who wanted McClurg fired for doing it, considering the engine to be a waste of time and money. Fortunately, it was presented to Cadillac, who then decided to stuff the motor into the mid-engined Cien concept sport car and unveil it at Pebble Beach in 2001 - two weeks before Maximum Bob joined the company. And the rest is history. Since Day One of this publication, we have insisted that GM has many talented people scattered throughout the company who are True Believers and genuine enthusiasts in every sense of the word. These people are the ones who have labored against all odds to keep GM in the performance game when the typical GM bureaucrat drones couldn't have cared less about it one way or the other. If Maximum Bob is like King Arthur in Camelot to these True Believers because he allowed them to unleash their dreams, then Ned McClurg is one of the Knights of the Round Table. Every enthusiast, no matter what your brand allegiance, owes Ned and his gang a tip of the hat. Oh, by the way - those two highly placed executives who wanted Ned's head over the V-12? They're no longer with the company."

Sounds like Ned McClurg & Hulki think along the same lines. Remember-No bean counter ever made a dime for a corporation. They can 'save' the corporation some money, but the designers, engineers, assembly workers & sales staff are the ones that make profits for companies.
Why? Because they usually are really enthuesed(sp) with automobiles-bean counters only care about $$$. Sometimes, as in life, ya just gotta take a chance.

Sounds like typical GM. Every couple years another story very similar to this comes out. GM tried the same bean counting kill to the Vette before the C5 came out. The C5 was actually designed using money mostly out of the Camaros budget. If it wasn't for these people over at Chevy, the Corvette may have gone the way of the Fiero. Its amazing how GM can be a car company, and yet not appear to really understand the business.
