Throw it in in place of the old one (make sure that the red side of the cable is lined up) and reboot. Windows MIGHT detect new hardware, but i suspect not. If it does, throw in win98 or whatever cd (assuming that) and let it find the driver..

Did you break off the cup-holder thingie?

When you swap it, make sure the jumper is set the same as the one it's replacing. Master, slave or CS. Two "masters" on the same databus don't play well together.

That 850mb hdd will probably slow your entire computer down. Since it can not "talk" as fast as newer drives it slows the bus down. If your current drive has about the same specs it will not hurt your perfomance at all.

just pull the old one out but make sure that the jumper is in the same place on both of them make it that much easier... next to the ide cable the big gray cable should be like some little pins just make sure that lil piece of plastic is over the same pins on both and pop her in..should auto detect and work......but im proud of you young grasshoppa...u have learned, if its not working, means your not kicking it hard enough.

what computer did it come from? if it was a packard bell, nec, or.... i think compaq, its not ide, it requires the soundcard from the original machien to work as a controller car, lots of older matsushita and mitsumi drives work that way. if you have any problems getting it to work, post back hrer, i think i have one of the controller cards around somewhere. if you have problems, go to compusa, buy the cheapest cdrom, and they nstall it for free
