Report: Bush Decides to Oust Saddam Hussein Photos
Reuters Photo
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) has decided to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), and has ordered the CIA (news - web sites), the Pentagon (news - web sites) and other U.S. agencies to devise plans to remove him, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.
The newspaper said no military strike was imminent. But it quoted unnamed U.S. officials as saying Bush had decided that Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs pose too great a threat to U.S. national security for Saddam to remain.
``This is not an argument about whether to get rid of Saddam Hussein. That debate is over. This is how you do it,'' the Inquirer quoted a senior Bush administration official as saying.
The newspaper said the White House was determined to act even if U.S. allies do not help, and is now waiting for government agencies to come up with a combination of military, diplomatic and covert plans aimed at achieving Saddam's ouster.
Escalating U.S. rhetoric on Iraq has alarmed Russia and America's European allies in recent weeks, while causing concern among experts about the political and human costs of a lengthy U.S. military campaign in the Middle East.
But the Inquirer said the CIA recently presented Bush with a plan to destabilize Saddam's well-entrenched regime in Baghdad, through a massive covert action campaign, sabotage, information warfare and significantly more aggressive bombing of the so-called no-fly zones over northern and southern Iraq.
The president was reportedly enthusiastic, and although it could not be determined whether he gave final approval for the plan, the CIA has begun assigning officers to the task, the newspaper reported.
Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) is also expected to tell Middle East leaders about U.S. intentions to get rid of Saddam during a tour of 11 Middle Eastern nations next month, the Inquirer said.
``He's not going to beg for support,'' a senior official was quoted as saying. ``He's going to inform them that the president's decision has been made and will be carried out, and if they want some input into how and when it's carried out, now's the time for them to speak up.''
You gotta admit he's got a set of balls bigger than Texas! I love him. Just what this country needs right now!

While agree something has to be done in that sector of the world, Bush had better get his act together, and start addressing issues here at home. Currently there are millions off people throughout this country that are "Laid Off". If he doesn't take some action soon, millions more will lose theirs jobs in the next couple months.
It's about time our "Leaders" stepped up to the plate and demanded that all the other "Free Countries" start pulling their weight.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

I agree that there are some domestic issues that deserve attention, but any credible and immediate threat to national secuirity really should be a top priority. Hussein is going to have to be dealt with now or later. Now may cause some hard feelings among some other nations, although I did see both Jordan and Saudi Arabia have expressed that they would like to see the US topple Hussein already. Later may be as a response to the loss of thousands, or millions of lives after Hussein uses a weapon of mass destruction.
Unemployment sure stinks. It took me over a year to find a job. But the economy appears as if its starting to rebound on its own. I'll also take a million unemployed over a million nuked.
Don't get me wrong either, I am not in favor of an all out war against Iraq or any other nation. Our military is starting to look like a Foreign Legion which it shouldn't. But there must be a middle ground between doing nothing and sending in the army for a big land campaign.

Hmm when I read this topic I thought you meant, he's going to get the US in more debt and eventually destroy the whole country because of his arrogance and stupidity... But then again, that IS what he is doing. I've never seen such a dork in such a position of power. I had hoped his advisors would be more intelligent, but they obviously can't help when the CIA sees their chance to use this dork at power in their advantage and get some funding their way and can finally see some action.
Can't believe anyone would actually think he know what he is doing. Mr. "subliminable" "I don't know who's in power in Pakistan and a couple of other countries" "all the businesses I've tried failed" "I got Texas polluted more than any governor" "In my time as governor I killed more people on deathrow than ever before" stupidity himself.
No offence meant to you guys, just that GWBugger of a guy

Screwie, did you know who the leader of pakastan was before this happened? I highly doubt it. Dont attempt to hold someone to a higher standard just cuz he's president. Idiots like that (the ones that hold ppl to higher standards) is why this country, and this world is screwed up as it is.
Sorry, don't agree there Galen. He wants to be president of one of the most important countries in the world, that means that he should have certain qualifications, just like in any other job. The fact is, he hasn't. It is normal to hold people to a higher standard as their responsibility increases. Managers of big companies DO know their competitors and DO know what they are talking about. You won't put a person like let's say Marilyn Manson (or whoever) as CEO of General Electric. Why not? Cause he does not have the qualifications and skills to do that kind of job. That's the way it works, and the way it should be. I'm sorry but your view of the world seems screwed up...

Aww come off of it, you know that people losing thier jobs is just "the beauty of capitalism in action" you must be one of them "librulls" that makes you a traitor and Unka Dick and John "The Crisco Kid" Ashcroft are gonna pay you a little visit, how'd you like to visit Cuba? Seriously though, If the 'lil bush wants to say we are at war, he needs to declare a war. The closest we came to being at war was retaliating against the Al Queada cowards in Afghanistan, which from all accounts is an action that we won. That means it's done. Are we just going to start rolling into countries that 'lil Bush decides are evil to keep the "wartime" popularity ratings up, it's going to come back to haunt him if, God forbid, something happens that costs us a lot of American soldiers or sailors, and people see through his little charade.

Capture the terrorists or whatever and get out of there. Extended US presence in those countries is not going to be good. Thousands of people over there hate us already and that's why they want terrorism here, let's let them be as third world countries and forget about them. They feel the US hasn't done a thing for anyone and won't get over things that happened 50 years ago.
I feel the same way, we can fight wars, but there's lots of issues here that need to be taken care of. Lots of concerns are "jobs" and our own economy. No income, and unemployment checks are not good for the quality of living and conditions here. If you knew the state of the auto industry you'd understand.

I'm no big "W" fan either, and in fact have not jumped on his wave of popularity since the attacks. What has he done? He did manage to put a big dent in the terrorists in Afghanistan, but after all the big speeches and grand standing he has not managed to come up with Omar or bin Laden. Not too impressive. He threw a lot of money around to make the country safer... so far they are still getting shoe bombs onto planes, and allow suspects to walk away from security before they can detain them. Now he is desperately looking for a new enemty since he cannot locate bin-Laden's where-abouts... So he names the "axis of evil" How do you call a whole nation evil? I understand he is getting at certain governments and people in them, but thats an awfully damning statement for a country... to call it "evil". These are words of war, not workign together. As I stated above, I am in favor of going after Hussein... have been for a long time. The guy s not going to keep quiet, and I feel we will have to deal with him sooner or later, so why not sooner before a disaster happens. But to call out Iran? and North Korea?? What happens if something erupts between either one and we go in? Do other Arab nations join Iran? Does China get involved in favor of North Korea? They have before. I do not think bush is smart enough to understand the consequences of certain actions! He better be careful whatever he does. This one has the potential of really blowing up in his face.

5 months ago all anybody cared about was thousands of lives lost, disruption of our way of life, and billions of dollars of property lost. Do whatever it takes to make sure it never happens again.
What, did you think that what we were doing in Afghanistan was all that was going to be necessary?
Now California Kid wants this attention called off to address jobs. If terrorist attacks continue, there will be LESS jobs.
And Screwie-what in the world are YOU talking about?? I'm highly educated, but I don't know who is the power in Pakistan, the Netherlands, and a bunch of other countries. You know why? Because they are irrelevant to me. But when they become relevant, I CAN LOOK IT UP. So if Bush is focused on relevant things, and has to look things up, that doesn't make him stupid. And if you can name some world leaders that he can't, that doesn't make you smarter.
Regarding his failures, well, even his critics are satisfied he is succeeding with what is happening in Afghanistan.
So why don't you go memorize a few more geography and sociology facts and names of world leaders and their extended family and pets, while Bush FOCUSES on what is important.

Either you mis-read the intent of my post or I'm mis-reading yours. I just think there are more important issues that need to be addressed on our home front, not abroad. We alone cannot fix all the worlds problems. The U.S. Auto Industry has colasped already, which starts a domino effect for all other industries and businesses. We've been in a recession for some time now, and I hope we don't see a "Great Depression" in my lifetime.
That's it for me, don't want to get into a big debate about this one, we're just along for the ride anyway, just hope it isn't a bad one.

Saddam is a rabid animal. And what do you do with rabid animals?
You put a bullet between their ears.
My question, though, is WHO will step in after Saddam's gone? Will the US lift the sanctions on Iraq after Saddam is a greasy smear on the walls? I really feel sorry for the Iraqian people. They've had to put up with a LOT of **** .

are you complaining about that? I think it is beautiful. Bush sets it up so that the Afghan people do most of the work. It is their country. Did you have an objection to that? He doesn't deserve credit for that plan? They didn't seem to be doing too well accomplishing that task until we got involved.

Wow what a change of attitude. I would bet that if this statement was made on Sept 12th by Bush there would be a much different reaction. Please don't forget so quickly what happened. Lets face it that we are going to have to deal with him sooner or later.

ray b continues to pove to me, that no matter how serious a topic is, it can be made to sound funny. a childs perspective is cool I guess.
screwie, he doesn't know how to hold office? did he just cruise through being gov. of Texas? Texas completely sucked and went to hell during his tenure there? Guess I should read more on the history of MY country.

I would suggest you read my post again, not knowing who is in power in certain countries is just one of the (many many) things he does wrong. But even if you want to talk about just this, not knowing who is in power in a country with nuclear power and almost in war with another nuclear power, well, I call that pretty damn stupid if you want to be president of the USA.
Ow and what he has done in Afghanistan, his critics are happy with that. Yeah there's not much that he could have done wrong there, now is there? Send in troops, get the Taliban out of there and catch Omar and Bin Laden.(He didn't do the last part, but I agree it's difficult in a country like Afghanistan) The thing I can give his advisors and Colin Powell credit for, is that they were able to silence Bush while they set up the coalition of nations against terrorrism.
And Galen, the fact that it is your country ahs nothing to do with how much you know about it I know people here in Holland who can't even point out Holland on a map of Europe. (I'm sorry but that's not me ) I was very interested and still am, in the political stuff that goes on in the US regarding the presidency. I watched all the debates and read loads of stuff about it, so you're not talking to an ignorant person here. Over the time that Bush was governor of Texas, Texas became one of the most polluted states in the US. The level of education in Texas is one of the lowest of the US and we can go on a bit. Maybe not proof all by itself, but if you put everything together that he has done... let's say, it doesn't look too good for him then...

Screwie, you are repeating things you have heard, instead of finding things out for yourself. My Texas education has never let me down in that regard.
Texas is one of the biggest in oil production in the world, let alone just the United States. This has been a fact since I was born in Dallas, Tx. in 1968. California, which has nowhere near the petroleum industry, was consistantly worse when it came to air pollution. And the last time I went through Allentown, Pa. and Hershey, Pa. ....., well, lets just say it wasn't a pleasant smell.
California set about standards to clean up their bad air, which should never have been as bad as it was. They finally, after years and years of these laws in place, cleaned up their air to a standard above that of Texas'. The air in Texas has become cleaner over these same years as well, but with all the refineries, they are starting at a disadvantage. Texas just got passed by states that should have had cleaner air to begin with. It wasn't that the air quality got worse.
I remember a story in AutoWeek a few years back about Honda coming out with a car that was built to CA. air standards of 2007. In testing it in L.A., the car actually CLEANED UP the air by the time it came out the exhaust!
PBS came out with a very good documentary about the time of the presidential election. Being that it was on PBS, I thought it would be very lopsided in Gore's favor. If anything, it showed just how great W. is. Gore was not helped in the least by this documentary. I was amazed to find out that Gore was more or less pushed into politics by his father. It was certainly not his first choice, or even in the top ten. Several of his college buddies they interviewed all said this. Another thing I was suprised to learn, was how many successful endeavours W. had captained. The Texas Rangers being one of his most famous. And he was extremely good at bringing together both the Dems. and Reps. for a common goal.
Does anybody remember reading in their history classes about Napolean, Hitler, Ghengis Khan, and other such leaders? They had to be defeated in their quests for world domination. Hussein is of the same ilk. He will not stop until he feels that he's the 'Big Dog on the Porch'.

"Repeating things I've heard"... Hmm didn't know that was a bad thing if you know what you're talking about (e.g. heard it from lots of different sources). And the documentary you quote... that's not repeating what you've heard? And you probably found out about Genghis Khan yourself?
Anyways, GW probably hasn't done everything wrong he has ever touched, I sure hope not otherwise we're all doomed I think we can argue about this a long time how much exactly he did worse than he could have, but in my opinion, he's ... well... dumb. There I said it Every time he has to do a speech he has not prepared, the things that he says. Compare that to say Clinton and he looks ... well... dumb
Ow and by the way, if you want me to find things out for myself, I would LOVE to! Send me the plane ticket and I'm on my way over there in no time. Can I get the guided tour of the whole country please?

ray b, Bush didn't buy the Rangers, he was made president of the organization, and turned it around. But instead, you make stuff up that you don't know. And you have obviously never been through Hershey, PA.
And Screwie, maybe I should have said that you should look at more than one source (objective) for info. A good example of lopsided reporting is Rush Limbaugh. A guy I used to work with listens to Rush Limbaugh all the time. Rush says stuff to be controversial all the time, and he does it just to get a rise out of liberals that listen to his show. Some people don't get that. Mostly liberals, but people like that co-worker take the things Rush says way to seriously. And what's worse, he doesn't realize that he should check up on Rush's reporting just like he should anybody else's! It's getting harder and harder to find objective reporting now days. Everybody seems to have a reason for bringing you the side they are reporting...
I am also a Texas resident and I think that anybody who has no faith in President Bush is just a victim of their own society and media.
The ONLY thing ANYBODY in the Netherlands can know about President Bush is what the radio and TV tells them. We all know how the media picks people apart and focuses more on the flaws than the positive points.
President Bush did a GREAT job as the governor of Texas and I think he is doing an even better job as President of the United States. AT LEAST he is doing the things he promised to do! I hope he does finish the fight with Iraq. Clinton should have finished the job, but he didn't and the Iraquis knew he wouldn't. Why else were they celebrating after Clinton won the election in '92?
I am not going to flame any particular person in this post, let's just leave it at this: Don't go shooting your mouth off until you have gathered the facts!

I am not going to flame any particular person in this post, let's just leave it at this: Don't go shooting your mouth off until you have gathered the facts!
Once again, I have gathered the facts, I've seen and heard all kinds of things about Bush from many different channels (I've looked at Dutch, French, German, Belgian and American(!) broadcasts about this) and I've seen the debates and I'm reading the cold facts of his plan or the US. So the argument that I don't know the facts is not very valid.
It is a difference of opinion, but I just don't agree with his plans, maybe he did what he said that he would do, yes, but what he said he would do was wrong in the first place, in my opinion.
Iraq is a very delicate situation. And you cannot just go in there guns blazing. There is so much diplomacy you SHOULD consider. Bush does not do that. The best example of his ignorance and non-existent skills in diplomacy is that he put Iraq, North Korea and Iran on one pile as "terrorist nations". Iran is trying to become a democracy, is trying to improve relations with the western world, especially their former biggest enemy the US and then Bush comes with these kind of statements... Nope, I haven't been convinced at all he is doing a great job, on the contrary, all the things he's doing and saying now, he convinces me of the opposite.
