Hey, I have to do a Spanish video, and it's due on Wednesday. I'm doing it by myself, and I need to know how to edit things out. Like, the times when I turn the camera on and off. I know to tape over the part where I turn it off, but I still have the part when I turn it on. It's a Sony video camera. Please Help!!! Thanks.

If you are transfering it to VHS get your video camera at the point you want to record. Hit record on the vcr, play on your video camera. Then when you get to a part on the video camera you want to edit out, hit pause on the vcr. You have to do a lot of preplanning so you know everywhere to pause, but it can be done.
I have been using a video camera since 1986 and last year for Christmas I made a video with all the clips of my wife's family from the 60 some tapes I have. It was a hit with the family as we couldn't make it back (800 miles). It made it even more special as my wife lost her mother suddenly 3 months later.

Is it a newer model Handycam? We just bought a Hi8 model that has a variety of fades built in, and also cuts from take to take seamlesslly. No help if you've already shot your video, but with these cams, a little advance planning can make some really cool videos without editing.
Thanks for the help. I know now that I shouldn't procrastinate as much. My dad also told me to hit pause on the TV when I want to "edit" out. It's also an older camera; piece of crap. We borrowed my uncle's camera. It also had the fade, but it didn't work, or I didn't do it right. Oh well. The video is worth 100 frickin points. And I'm not too good at Spanish, either. If Mrs. Pearson doesn't like it, I'll shove it up her culo! Thanks again.

If you could forgive me the slight digression: Wouldn't it be worth the difference for me to get a digital video camcorder instead of a digital camera (which I want to get soon)? I could send still pictures from it onto my email and posts, right? Anybody know how much difference in cost? Sure I could look it up, but I'm at work.

The new Sony digital Handycams are so dayum cool. There is even one available tha can print out the color shots a la a Poloroid camera but on photo paper. Of course you are looking at $1300 or so. But our non digital Handycam (top of the line Hi-8 with all the bitchin whistles and bells) was $800 and a Mavica is around $500, you do the math I guess.
Cheever2, my 9 year old JVC VHS-C camera just died so I was just going to pick up another cheap one. Then I started looking at digital ones. Found a JVC miniDV camcorder I wanted: model dlv505. Checked it out at Best Buy. $999! Ouch. Went to www.pricewatch.com. Found a sight selling them for $585! 2 day shipping-total $620! Got it in 3 days!
However, in relation to your question, although most digital camcorders can take still pictures, the pixel count so resolution of the pictures is quite a bit less than the good designated digital cameras, so you would have to decide if you were willing to make that compromise.

I picked up one of those Sony digital cameras the other day, the DCR-TRV720 NTSC. The next one up had a small printer inside and I didn't want that. Anyway This camera also has a memory stick in addition to the digital tape. You don't have to take the stills on the tape if you don't want to. You can also take a still shot with the stick off of the tape! Pretty cool. I'm sure the picture taken off the tape isn't as good as directly to the stick, but oh well. It did take a $999.00+ bite out of my wallet though. ..............What was the question again? Oh yeah, like they said before, when transferring over to VHS, get that pause button ready to stop and start your VHS tape and your Hi8 tape. I'm still learning about this thing so I'm not sure how to fade in and out when editing. I guess by having a remote in each hand to operate both pieces of equipment. Good Luck!

I got mine a couple of years ago. Its a DCR-TRV510 NTSC. Top of the line back then. One cool thing is that you can play your old 8mm tapes and load them into the computer and pull them out back to the camera and then they are also digital. I seldome ever take still pictures. I just video things and then freeze the frami I want to capture. Almost all the pictures on my web site were done that way.
