I was driving down the highway mid-morning, and what did my eyes see, but 5 brand new C5s with blue manufacturer plates, all under wraps. These were no "normal" Vettes either. Tires were very low profile, wheels on it were nothing you can buy on the market. Under the wraps, it was very distinguishable where new lower boday panels had been placed, and of many new possible air intake scoops. Only the mysterious panels were coverd. The rest of the car was openly exposed. They looked like prototype racers or something. 2 were bright yellow, 3 were dark red. I am going to start carrying a camera with me everywhere. Stuff like this has happened too many times. I need to start taking pictures of what I see.

Hehehe... Having family in very high places with-in GM i know some secrets. First off your correct. The cars you saw are prototypes. GM has takin the basic C5s and done special street modifications. These cars are being tested to see if they could be utilized as a special order limited edition vechicle. I had the pleasure of seeing one of them ran at the Detroit testing facility...WOW...you want to talk about fast...i had to go clean my self up after that.. The tires are Yokahoma's only available over seas and cost around $400 each.
The C5-R Corvettes that are endurance racing this year (Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring, etc) are running a 427! Gawd, what if Chevy produced a limited-edition C5 Corvette with the 427 for the street? I bet they could sell 1000 Corvette LM-427's at $100K apiece!
I'm just happy to use "C5 Corvette" and "427" in the same sentence.
I would love to be those guys that drive the test cars on the streets. I think the show is called motorweek, unless its car and driver and they would take videos of test cars on the streets, and you would see them speed away from the videocameras, while in heavy traffic which they cant get anywhere.
