Can the engine mounts be installed without taking out the engine? What tools would be needed to do that?
There is a 86 Fiero that is very inexpensive but a few miles away that has a broken engine mount. I have most tools at home that I could take to it, but do NOT know what is involved? I am assuming that 1. jacking up the car is the first thing, 2. removing the broken mount(of course) and 3. being able to maneuver the engine so the holes can line up. Will a hydralic jack be sufficient? Would you need to loosen the bolts on rest of the good mounts to be able to maneuver the engine?
The other question is can the fiero be safely driven with a single broken engine mount?

Is it a V6 or 4 cylinder. I have been able to take the engine mount off without pulling the whole thing on my 84. Lining it up again was a pita. Loosening the transmission mount to cradle bolts helped so I didn't tear the rubber in the mounts. I haven't done this kind of work on a V6 though. The car can be driven home with a broken engine mount, just take it easy when driving it. ------------------ 1984 White Fiero Sport Coupe (Juliet) in restoration https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/089093.html 1988 Red Fiero Standard Coupe (Bella) in restoration 1990 Black Buick Reatta (Noir) 2002 White Chevy Impala base(Haylie)

Not sure what year, engine or trans, because I have not seen it. When I say drive it home I mean to Texas, the car is in California. (I should have put that out there first) I will be looking a a few Fieros while I am out here. This one is the cheapest running vehicle @ $500. I am specifically looking for a 4 Cyl 5 Speed. I already have 4 6Cyl Fieros, 1 of which runs well and looks good.
I have only seen one Fiero so far which I have rejected.I came out here on a 0ne-way ticket so I have to get back home somehow.

You need jack stands, jack, and some blocks of wood. It would also be helpful to have a 4x4 and a racheting strap (to hold engine up, along with the jack from below).
You may have to drop the exhaust from the front connection also.
A pry bar is helpful, and you may have to drill out the holes in the frame, as the new mounts may not line up exactly.
I have replaced mounts on an 84, 86, 87 and 88 4 cyls.
BTW, driving a $500 car that distance probably isn't the best idea, but....

Cali to Austin huh...... I will say hell no any Fiero for $500 would NOT make that trip without a hickup or five. pack(or buy) a full set of wrenches and torx drivers for the long haul home.
slap a chain around the mount and frame, put a nut and bolt through it and drive home. torque of a 4 banger won't break the chain.(<<<<old school way)
You should check out Bat City Fieros in Austin,TX (facebook is the best way) We will be having our 2yr. anniversity June 15(will be go kart racing)
Go-Kart racing??? The Fiero IS a go-kart isn't it. We do this every day!!! LOL. I am looking at a few different Fieros while I am here. Not set on this one. Have not even been able to get the owner to get back to me. Was looking for some guidance if it became a possibility. There is a rolling chassis I will be looking at today. He wants to sell it for $100 had it in Craigs list for $150 but no takers, I did not even ask for a price drop. Panels are in good shape as is the frame. It will probably end up getting crushed, SHAME. Trans and engine are gone and I believe the care was bought to salvage them only. He is in the country so I am considering getting it and asking if I can leave it there for a couple of months, stripping the interior now, & coming back later and stripping more and in the mean time see if I can sell the frame to an enthusiast locally....
He has his $$$, I have parts, the car is not crushed!

We have a member here in Austin that drove a $700 car back from San Francisco. Car needed some brake work and a new tire though. You need to stop buying Fieros though, I am the Fiero order of the Austin area with 6. lol

Oh, and it is possible to change it out. Best to have the car up on jack stands so you have more room underneath. Loosen or remove all the bolts holding the mounts to the cradle and the bolts holding the rubber mount to the engine. Lift the engine up (with a hoist or jack just watch out how you place the jack) when you have the clearance remove and replace and reverse the procedure.
That is what I was thinking also. Jack the car up, jack up the drivetrain, remove & replace. I just did not know if it was as simple as that. The other problem is that I can not get the guy to respond. So I may not be able to use the good information you guys have given.
HOWEVER!!!, I bought a different Fiero today and may be buying 2 more before I leave this area. I bought a 1988 GT T-Top with a bad fuel pump for $500. Body is pristine as far as damage. Needs a bit of paint. Interiorneeds a little work but not all that bad. 104,000 miles. I will not be driving that one back though. They gave me until October 31 to do what ever I am going to do to it. so I will be going back t. Along with that I am going to another location to look at a 1988 Coupe 'rolling chassis' It appears to have good tires because the owner has the car up on jacks. He only wants $100. Then on to the car I will be driving home the beginning of next week.
Good thing I can hide all of these from the wife until I get rid of some of my inventory. The T-Top I could not pass up. They came down from $875 to $500 without me asking. It needs tires because it has been sitting on the ground for a while. They have started the engine periodically with starter fluid.
BTW Marine1981, Only 1 of mine work without any issue. You are probably in no danger, lol.
I did buy another this morning. It was a 1988 with no engine or trans. The owner is using it for another vehicle. This donor car ran so the fuel pump is good. I can now just take out the fuel tank of this and swap the whole tank into the one I bought yesterday. I just have to get it from a little town outside of Sacramento to a little town outside Fresno.
The chassis on this car is rust free and accident free. The panels are perfect. I will put up the link but I do not know how long he will leave it up. He took the motor and trans out from the top, the hard way. LOL the motor mounts are still there but the guy with the car with the bad motor mount has not called me back YET!!!
One more buy so I can get back home. I am catching up, but 2 of my vehicles are out of state. The rolling chassis one will never come to Texas under my name. I am going to strip it here in California for the panels and parts I want. Then get the chassis to a modder, it will never be officially in my name.

Man, you are finding all kinds of good deals. If you want your money back on that T-Top let me know! I have 2.5 running right now. One is at the body shop getting paint right now, one is a daily driver but I have it sold already, the other I need to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump then figure out what else pops up with it. Good luck getting them all back here.
The no 'drivetrain' situation has sort of backfired. The parents of the guy that sold me the car (apparently the mother) wants the car gone by this Thursday. I am back in Austin so I am trying to get a way to salvage that deal. They have offered to give me the $$$ back but I would much rather have access to the car parts for the T-Top.
I did buy a 1985 4Cyl 5 speed that I drove back here from Camarillo, CA. without any serious problems. My plan was to drive at night because the southern route(I-10) was 106 degrees mid day. In El Paso I found out that it was the right thing to have done. It got a little overheated but I let it cool down until the evening again and all was well. I left Monday and got back last Wednesday. I averaged about 32.5 mpg going about 70-75 mph. This car is in great shape and looks like it has been garaged most of its life. The interior is in unbelievably good condition for its age. It has 106xxx miles and just hummmm's along. New transmission in March and the owner gave me a ton of stuff. New parts like gaskets, hoses, thermostats, distributor, etc. It actually filled the trunk in back half way up. Tires look new and are nitrogen filled. All for the low price of $1100. If you back the price of an airplane ticket out my total cost of ownership on this is about $850.(not taking into consideration the freebies, then it would be much less)
