Can anyone point me in the direction of the best thread on how to upgrade auto transmission in my 86gt. I was looking for a stock fiero transmission but can't find one around my area.

So do you want to change from manual to auto, replace your current 3 speed auto with a rebuilt one, or upgrade to a 4speed auto overdrive?

You can do a "th440 4t60" 4 speed auto. Its a stand alone transmission that will work with your 2,8 or 3.4 upgrade.
I did this one https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/091761.html and used this as a reference https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/091777.html

Edit; I have one sitting in my garage I plan to put in my coupe.

To be honest I want to do what's most affordable. I want a straight drive but if it'll cost me an arm and a leg I'll just upgrade the automatic.

Anyone know about the cost of the swap to "manual" as y'all say. Or the price of swapping to an upgraded auto?

It is to difficult to come up with a price because most parts would be used
the fiero 3 speed auto is a great transmission, far superior to the POS 4 speed auto, but has a bad reputation because men here want to go faster.higher, better or get better MPG
I would not concider this swap unless you are a very experienced gearhead,,.many on this site make a swap sound like a walk in the park. NO,NO!! I speak from experience ,, there are men on this forum who can drop a tranny & replace it in a day,I am not one of them
you would need a doner car,buy one or locate a whole car at the junk yard.
you are asking for trouble, this is not easy to do.. ,drive & enjoy your car repair needed & as needed
to do this correctly you need a rebuilt transmission $900.oo ,,or a used tranmission you are positive is very good
,, there are shift kits available.I would just leave it alone,
A fiero with automatic transmission is worth twice what a manual Fiero is,& is much, much easier to sell !
the 3 speed automatic was the best transmission availble by far ,when the Fiero was new
you are better off buying a manual shift car, Fiero,s are one of the cheapest classic collector cars
I would just change the transmission fluid & filter,, it,s probably been in the car 20 years
I wish I could swap my 86 4 speed with you but have to many upgrades & hundreds of hours
my left leg is going (shouda zaged)& it is difficult to depress the clutch, regret the HD clutch I installed,an automatic is in my future.

go to the ogre section for info on auto tranny upgrades, then research this forum use search feature at top right
the fiero store has an upgrade kit part #54900 about $60.00

A 4t60 auto cost me $100.00 "core value" the rebuild was $800.00 in Las Vegas at a cut rate shop. I then moved to Illinois where it was $350.00 to redo the rebuild because they missed an o-ring way down deep in the shift drums by the differential. I was quoted $1300.00 from a Pro speed shop in the first place, I should have done that. The rebuilds were with me delivering the trans to their work bench so it would have saved me alot of frustration.

A new set of poly motor mount were 65.00 each I got the two brackets left and right from the pick n pull. The brackets from the 4t60 will bolt to the Fiero motor mounts. I reused the stock front motor mount.

Theres a bracket that bolts from the differential end of the trans to the motor block that has to be custom made, it helps to have a friend with a welder.

Axles were from a Pontiac J-6000 "plug and play", $98.00 each from Napa auto parts.

12 quarts of trans fluid

Theres a two wire circuit that has to be made for the TCC solenoid.

The kick down cable is reused from the 3-speed on the 4-speed.

I did the work my self.

That comes to about $1,700.

It is worth it if you use it as a daily driver.
