This engine is from a Chrysler TC by Maserati, which is a hussied up LeBaron with the Trident on the grille.

The short block is Chrysler's 2.2 turbo engine, with a well proven ability to make big power on big boost.

The cylinder head is a Maserati-specific part. It's DOHC 4V and radically outflows the stock Chrysler SOHC 2V head.

The Getrag 284, as we already know, is a stout gearbox.

With appropriate turbo upgrade, intercooling and engine management, this package could put down 400 RWHP reliably with a stout enough driveline to show good times at the strip or road course.

I have enough on my plate or I'd be thinking about it.

It's a Maserati engine... At least it came out of a Maserati!

There used to be an email list on Topica called "masi-dodges", but I can't find it now.
Development help could probably be had from the turbo Shelby community.

That kind of money you would be better off going with the 3800SC crowd.. the same power could be had for far less if you do the work..

Interesting idea, though I'm somewhat skeptical it could be built to make 400 RWHP. That would more than double what the stock turbo and intercooler was able to make from the factory since Chrysler only claimed 200 HP at the crank. If it could be done, I would doubt the durability. Regardless, here's an article from Road & Track June 1988 that I scanned in about the car.

I think it could be interesting.
Heck... People have been boosting the dog-snot out of the basic 2.2 and doing some amazing things.
Many of us have seen the articles on the web about the Dodge minivan with stratospheric boost that was eating Z28s and Mustangs for lunch at the strip.

Why not?

No, it's a Maserati head on a Chrylser block. Kinda like the old Ford Taurus 6 cyl SHO engines are a Yamaha head on a Ford block, unlike the 8 cyl SHO engines which were Yamaha engines.

Exactly... the turbo 2.2's have been thoroughly proven via the Shelby Turbo Omnis and similar. The 2.2 block can make a lot of power. In most applications it's severely limited by the cylinder head, but in this particular case, the Maserati head fixes that.

And as I mentioned, the 284 is a stout gearbox. The combo should be good for high power and good reliability.

Spoilsport

It came out of a car with a Maserati VIN, and you won't find one in any car with a Chrysler VIN. The short block has internal components that are specific to that application.

Does the Ferrari 458 have a Maserati engine?
