I just got some new 4x6 speakers to replace the rears in my car but not sure how to get the old ones out. i replaced the fronts last week real easy. do the back speaker covers pop off the same way the front ones do? that's what i tried doing but i heard a crack so i stopped. or will i need to pull the pillar pieces off?

No they don't. You need to remove the whole side panel to get to the speakers. You can start by removing the seat belt and go from there.

It helps to take the seats out also. It is a PITA to remove all the stuff to get at the B pillar speakers.

thanks guys i figured it out. bummer though because after all that effort the speaker magnet on the new speakers is too big. I can get the speakers into place and if i so chose the panel would hold them in. But i'm not comfortable with that soo,... stuck with stock in back. Luckily with the new ones in front it really sounds pretty decent anyway. just gotta get a small sub. Maybe dickmans stock replacement? who knows.

Anyway, thanks guys.

Some years ago I encountered the same problem with a 4 speaker set I ordered from The Fiero Store. I ended up buying a pair from Radio Shack that had smaller magnets.

That sucks.

If it makes you feel any better: Most high end sound systems don't use "rear fill", which are speakers in the rear of the car. It messes with imaging.
Subwoofers don't count as, if properly tuned, are not easy located by the ear.

All that said, I was equally disappointed that my Polk MOMO MM460's didn't fit.

I replaced my stock sub woofer in my 87 GT with one of Rodneys subs. I'm not an audiophile and wanted to keep the stock radio and speakers. I have replacement B pillar speakers for the car and if I ever get really motivated I may replace them. I did replace the B pillar speakers in my IMSA as when I was replacing the seat belts I saw those speakers were torn.

I just replaced my rear speakers with a set of kenwoods (I don't remember the model #). They had slightly larger magnets, but they fit, and made a huge difference in the sound quality. (not surprising since I replaced 25 year old stock).

I haven't used Rodney's speakers, but I would not hesitate to do so. EVERYTHING from Rodney is high quality, and I've heard good things about his speakers.

My recomendation would be to order a set from Rodney, you will not be dissapointed.
