I have decided to start the build on my poor little 86 GT.
I had considered selling it and finding a daily driver, but all the ones I looked at locally were in worse condition than my parts car...

It will be my summer project.
Here is what I have planned..
4.9L auto swap. (converting 4 speed to auto)
Completely new front end. (Done)
Lowering 3-4 inches front, 2-3 rear. (1/2 Done)
Poly suspension (Done)
new brakes (rotors, bearings, pads, hoses, etc.) (Done)
shocks
headlight rebuild
Custom interior
New wheels/tires
Rear poly
Fuel pump. (Done)
electrical inside and out.
door hinges
windshield
Removing all AC components. (Done)
Shaving door handles/install poppers.

Enough?

So far, other than the doors, I have stripped it to the frame.
I removed everything down the coolant tubes, brake lines, wiring, everything. I am painting just about all the parts as I go. There is no rust anywhere on this car.
Starting point.

Gutting the front and rear end

cleaning up

painting, burning out old bushings.

getting ready for transplant

converting to auto. plugged clutch master hole, installed auto pedal

lots of work to do on the interior!
I am still collecting parts for the swap.
So far, I have the axles done, new water pump, cleaned up the block. Still need to get a tensionor, belt, mounts, exhaust, wiring, cooling, fuel lines, misc hoses, etc.

I need a few odds and ends to get it ready still.
The Fiero Store is about to receive a couple of BIG orders over the next few weeks. My budget for parts is under $2500. This will include replacing or rebuilding just about every moving part, seal, and gasket. The suspension will be like new.

I am still not sure on the body yet. I have a few ideas after I get it drivable.
1. Chop top
2. Fastback with Indy scoop (The Stray clone, for those that remember that beast!)

3. Matte finish
4. Some shade of Orange, or Blue.
5. Some sort of rebirth of the Short Bus, V8 style.

I always end up with fastbacks, even though I prefer the lines of an aero notchie.

Ideas are welcome! If you have any parts I might need, hit me up!

Still planning while I am building....
More to come!

Got some parts in.
Rodney's upper and lower ball joints.
FS poly everything.
I also got the coils cut and painted, as well as all the control arms.

Lots left!

My buddy stopped by work this week to show off his Challenger.
He is pushing 900HP!

Thought about chopping this one, but then I picked up another project. 84 4 speed converted to a 2.8. 74K miles. good body and interior. Might have to cut it up.

I need some new ideas now!

Here are my brakes installed on the 86.

I cut 2 coils out. Right at the edge with the stock tires. Might have to go with a lower profile, or different rims.

I'm cleaning up for a vacation trip in a few weeks to San Diego!
The 84 is getting a new engine this week, and possibly a fastback conversion.
I've been working on the hood for the past few days.

After the 84 is drivable, I'll get back to the 86.
One of them will be for sale when complete. Just not sure which one I like better.
I may trade them both for a nice stock daily driver.

I also acquired a nice stash of parts this weekend. Stay tuned in the Mall! Looking for some trades to get these two going strong.

Keep the photos coming. I have a 4.9L side project going on as well but in an 85 GT convertible. Same conversion 2.8L stick to 4.9L auto. Be interested to know you will handle the trans cooler requirement. You could locate a cooler in the rear of the car but that application is in a hot area. Might be better to run lines to the front and change over radiators. As you know, the shifter, console, clutch pedal and shift cable also need to be changed. Its a lot of work but with a 4.9L I would also lean towards the automatic.
BTW did you do a cylinder leakdown test on that 4.9L for all cylinders? Did one today on a 70K engine and all checked out excellent. Very low leakage. Now I've got to get the rest of the 13 years worth of degreasing, painting and gasket replacements done. I am following this thread with great interest.
While a 4.9L is not a 3800SC, LS-3 or LS-4, it does perform prety well and where else can you get 275 ft lbs of torque and 25-30 hwy mpg on a DIY swap that will cost under $2000 even using phonedawgs swap harness.. Right now the junkyards are just loaded with 4.9L Caddy engines

I'm still undecided on the cooler. It is not really required, but I may run an aftermarket cooler up front. As far as the conversion, most of it is complete. I removed the clutch line, master, and other parts. Blocked off the hole in the firewall, and swapped out the manual pedals for auto. Only thing left is the shifter and cable. I'm still hunting for those.
After the rest of the car is complete, I'll start installing the 4.9. I have a spare cradle that I'll build it on.
This will be my second 4.9. The first was a dropout from another fiero, so it was really just plug and play.
I am attempting the harness myself also. Hopefully I won't pull my hair out.

This 84 should be back on the road shortly, then I can dig back into the GT>

This is an auto swap right? If we are talking about the transmssion oil cooler it is a must. Some people consider the engine oil cooler as optional but GM may have specified one on the 4.9L for a reason.I may put the engine oil cooler out back where the cat was and swap the radiator for an automatic one. Running the trans oil lines will be a PITA as there is little room to get around the steering knuckle.

I guess that read different than I typed it. I meant that I am not sure where to run the cooler. Either aftermarket or trade out the radiator for the stock route. I removed all the AC parts, so I have plenty of room around the manual radiator to put a nice one in. They are only around $50, and a new radiator is about $150. It's been awhile since I have messed with an auto, but the trans cooler lines run where the clutch line is on a manual, right?

The more I talk about it, the more I wanna get going again!
This 84 needs to get out of the garage!

Stalled out for now. Had them up for sale, but looks like I may dig back in and finish both. Everybody that calls wants to give me my asking price AND get them them running for free....?
