Its almost time to get my 84 2M4 out of storage and I'm already thinking about a few improvements I'm going to make. I'd like to paint the decklid vents and luggage rack spoiler and am wondering what type of paint to use? I've used matte black in the past, which works fairly well, but seems to fade fairly quickly. Were the original vents matte or semi gloss? Are they the same color as the mirrors, as they need doing as well?
I believe all of that stuff - the vents and the luggage rack - is a Satin Black.
Some members have found that spraying all of that with BBQ grill paint works very well also - in addition to giving some solid heat protective properties. Just make sure you do some good prep work before you spray any color down.
I sanded and prepped my mirrors and hit them with a common Duplicolor gloss black. I've done that with all my Fieros and it's always came out well.
Gloss black does look nice but I'm trying to stay as original as possible. Satin sounds like it might work better than matte, do you know where I can get it? In the auto section I can only remember seeing matte or gloss. I've used BBQ paint as well but it is matte as well and tends to fade quickly too.
If you're having problems with the paint fading, try having it clear coated, then polishing the panels weekly/monthly, to prevent them from fading.
I'm not sure why you're having issues with your panels fading. My '84s panels look to be OEM paint, and they're still a nice dark black, after having been in Tucson all/most of its life.
