Hi everyone! So for those of you who cut down your auto shifters. What do you do about the shift boot? Mine is down to where the boot would sit lower then where it actually mounts. What have you come up with instead?
How about some kind of sliding cover in the slot the shift lever goes through?
Thats what I'm planning to do, I got a shift knob and trim plate from a 95 cutlass supreme. I dont have any pictures yet though, I can take some when I get home if anyone cares.

Fiero84freak. Basically the bottom of my shift knob is level with that plate that holds the shift boot. Ill take a picture. And if you guys make the slider could you post some pics please
i could prolly fab one up in an afternoon, just take some cardboard and poke the shift thru in it neutral position cut some lines with a knife so the shifter can slide and mark the spots where the shifter stops at. then use a marker to trace an outline around the cuts of the shifter hole width you want and then trace it onto some 16 gauge sheet steel form the hardware store an hour later and some cutting discs and you got something ready for paint.

More or less that's what I have now. Just a small block off plate. But it still doesn't look complete. And I need to build I better one. I can still see and drop stuff through so I wanna do that with something underneath that moves as well
oh ya humm.... im assuming by block off plate you mean just like something round that you put on the shaft of the shifter just underneith the plate? you could try layering thin plastic so it moves like an acordian left to right altho i dont know how you would do front to back as the whoel thing would have to move....this is an interesting problem ill have to think about for a while.

Not sure exactly what your situation, but I never hesitate to post this up as an idea.

Rather than being able to see all the wiring and cables down through the shift gate, I learned a little trick with my 308 kit a number of years ago. I cut out a thin rectangular frame out of a sheet of aluminum the same size at the shift gate with just a rectangular hole in the middle (ie no gates). Then, I loosely stretched two layers of black nylon stocking material over it and got my wife to sew it like a pocket completely covering the frame. Next, she sewed a button hole with her machine in the center of the nylon to allow it to slide over the shifter once the ball was removed. Finally, I mounted the thin metal frame underneath the shift gate so that the only thing seen is the black nylon. The nylon material easily stretches enough so that no matter which position the shifter is in, all you see when you look at the gate is blackness. It also prevent things like coins etc from falling into the console. Here's a couple pics with the shifter in reverse and first... note that there aren't even any wrinkles in the nylon.
I think it looks really clean, maybe some aspect could be applied to your situation?

Ohhh.... Ok. I get it now. You were confusing the hell out of me first I thought you meant the actual shifter (as in where you grasp it) sat so low it was BELOW the mounting point of the boot (as so low it was near completely recessed).
Yeah, plastic sliders would work. You're probably just going to have to go through some bone yards and see if you can find anything that could work. It's going to be a toss up, as I don't think I've ever seen a setup like that in a Fiero.

I like the one posted above with the 5 speed. Something like that would be cool but I think if I throw it back in first that would be a whole lot of stretch compared to what he has unless I built it all with the car in neutral so it was even on both sides. Well since it doesn't really seem to be done with an auto on monday or tuesday I will go to the yard with a friend or dad depending on the day and will come up with something. If anyone is interested I can document what I come up with.
.Cutting & sewing the old shift boot works well you can even have it lower than the plate.. you just fold the leather over easy to change color go to leather store ..I now have a super neato jet hurst rubber flex boot($20) tranformed the interior,no longer jealous of madcurl, skitime as I tool down the road with my super cool neato jet hurst shift boot,in my Rat fiero, its like Miss golden shifter ,Linda Vaughn is in the car with me

WHOA!! Linda Vaughn?? YOU "must" be older than dirt?!? I can't imagine having a "shift boot" that would feel as soft-smooth-suptle-and as sensuous as Miss Golden Shifter!?!
