I was wondering if there was any company that made gears to change the final drive ratio in a Getrag 5 transmission. Hooked up to a 4.9, would like to change them to make them more suitable for the engine.

There are ways to make the gear ratios quicker...but I don't think that is what you are going for. The Fiero had the tallest gears available in the Getrag 282.

Quickest reference I can see for what other gears are available is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...rag_282_transmission

It's actually very very easy. Put on taller tires. If you have 205/60/15's go to a 225/65/15. An inch or 3 will make a difference, but other than that no there are no aftermarket gears.

The only real option for you is to find a 3.32 econo 4 spd, which is rare ($$$). Or swap to a 3.65 4 spd and get a 3.32 4 spd out of a citation and swap the final drive (less rare). The difference between a fiero 3.32 and a citation 3.32 is the 4th gears. With a fiero one you not only get a 3.32 you also get a .73 4th gear, with the citation one you get the same 4th as the other fiero 4 spds, .81

If you use a 3.65 trans, with a 3.32 FD swapped in, you're first gear will drop from 12.64 (getrag) to 10.99

In the real world, the 3.32 3.65 hybrid 4 spd with the stock .81 4th gear would look like this (assuming 5200 RPM redline, and 215/60/15"s or similar height tires 25" tires).

3.32 hybrid
1st-----33.7
2nd-----57.2
3rd-----90.0
4th-----137.8
Cruise at 60-----2150RPM

Getrag
1st-----29.7
2nd-----50.1
3rd-----74.4
4th-----109.2
5th-----142.5
Cruise at 60-----2080RPM

Going to a 27" tire
1st-----36.3
2nd-----61.5
3rd-----96.8
4th-----148.1
Cruise at 60-----2000RPM

1st-----31.5
2nd-----53.8
3rd-----80.0
4th-----117.4
5th-----153.3
Cruise at 60-----1933RPM

So there you have it, on the cheap, swap in a hybrid 3.32 3.65 4 spd, and 2" taller tires
