my compressor stopped working , i was quoted a charge of around $1,000.00 dollars to fit it. he rattled of alot of parts. a good friend of mine worked for him for 2 yrs. and said he was a good boss and new what he was doing with a/c. my question does the price sound to high or is it a fair price.
That's the average price around here. If you did it yourself, you'd be looking at minimum $240 for the compressor, $20 for the accumulator, and $3 for the orifice tube, plus $50 for a gauge set and $100 for a vacuum pump, and $40 for 2 lbs of R-134A and $5 for the compressor oil. (~$500)

I got my remanufactured Compressor for my GT for $80. Need to shop around
I'm glad I live where I do. I just had a local A/C mechanic fix my system. Replaced the compressor with a rebuilt unit, orifice, low pressure switch, a recharge and belts for the whole engine. Cost: $592.00
The average cost in Florida is around $650-700 for a NEW (not rebuilt) compressor, dryer, oriface tube, labor and R-134a. I would continue to shop around.

Related to this if anyone gets an AC hose leak... It happened on our 86 2m4. Both rubber lines leaked at the crimp by the compressor. (Fierostore sells hoses for 84's for $204.95 and V6s for $176.95, but not other year 4 cylinders.) You can send your lines to these guys and they will put new rubber hoses on your lines. There are two places in MN. The one I used is:
Kecks Repair 7123 SW 82nd Ave Owatonna, MN 55060 Phone: (507) 455-2679 Fax: (507) 463-8354 -they cost $110 to refit new hoses to my lines.
another is: Dealer Automotive Svc Inc 1102 5th St S, Hopkins, MN 55343 Phone (952) 933-3575
Also Autozone has "new" compressors from "compressor works" for 4 cylinder cars for $225.
