One person is dead and another is in hospital battling serious injuries after a car smashed into a tree in Mississauga late Wednesday night.
Emergency crews were called just before midnight when a Pontiac Fiero crashed into a tree and split in half at the intersection of Queen Street West and Shawnmarr Road.
The 46-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while his trapped 16-year-old passenger had to be removed by firefighters before being transported to Credit Valley Hospital.
The teen was later airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital, where he continues to fight for his life.
Both occupants are from Mississauga, but police would not say if they were related.
Police continue to investigate the crash.

Prayers to the families.

my condolences to the family and may the other person pull through and make a full recovery. I would like to know how fast they were going too as to cleave a car that way would require excessive speed.
Ouch, that GT must have really taken a hit. I hit 2 trees going at least 25-30mph at the time of impact and my car wasn't anywhere near that bad, hell its getting repaired this weekend. That must have been at least a 60mph+ impact for it to fold up like that. My condolences to the family.

Thats crazy. I'm from Mississauga... I don't think I recognize the car as somebody that hangs around the Fiero crowd here... hopefully the 16 year old is okay.

I recently got a call from a guy in Ontario with a gold 86 Fiero. I have already tried calling his house and got no answer. I hope it was not him.
Does anyone else know Kevin Ligges from Ontario?
I didn't seen anywhere where it said the posted speed limit for the road he was on. If he was doing 50-60mph and hit a tree I could see it splitting the car. However if it was a lower speed zone, I can't see it happening. The gentleman that I spoke to, did not seem like the type of person to really hot dog around in a car.
Well whoever you are, RIP, and I hope the son pulls through. I also hope the son was unconscious at the time of the accident, as seeing your father pass away right in front of you, would destroy me for life.

I definitely don't mean to be insensitive, but the way the story reads, sounds like a bad situation to begin with... 46 year old driver with a 16 year old passenger...
Maybe I've been corrupted by all those horror movies I've seen.... gotta stay away from that.
Anyways, That poor Fiero. looks like a nicely cared for GT too. That sucks regardless. I certainly hope the kid makes it out without serious long-term injury. Either physical, or mental. That **** can screw you up for life. My thoughts go out to the family that's survived by that driver. They're going to need all the help and support they can get.

Just how does a car split in half? I think the news reporter is over exaggerating a bit and the pic of the car looks like the Jaws Of Life got a hold of it (to remove the 18yro)... Myth Busters tried to split a car in half with one of those big V-plows and couldn't. I find it hard to believe that tree could...

What does that have to do with anything? God forbid a father and son go out for a drive together, especially with the father driving.

I've seen it happen a few times already. Twice with honda civics, the car just split in half cleanly right behind the driver/passenger seats... Its pretty scary knowing that can happen. Also, Fieros are designed to break in half- just not the way the picture suggests above. I don't know if you remember, but a few months ago there was a post about a Fiero getting hit by a train and splitting in half. The car split just behind the seats where the rear window is, and probably saved the driver's life.

A 46-year-old father is dead and his 18-year-old son is fighting for his life in hospital after their sportscar smashed into a tree in Mississauga late Wednesday night.
Emergency crews were called just before midnight when a 1986 Pontiac Fiero crashed and split in half at the intersection of Queen Street West and Shawnmarr Road at about 11 p.m..
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while his son was trapped in the car for an hour before he was removed from the vehicle by emergency crews and then airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital.
Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol was a factor, but it's unknown why or how the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Both occupants are from Mississauga.

Man! I really hope that kid makes a recovery, I'm shocked!
I do have to say that since the C-pillar support is cut really cleanly, and the roof is now on the ground, plus half the dash is in front of the car, this picture was taken after the emergency crews used the jaws of life on the car. So yes, this accident is bad, really really bad (fatal), but the car was pulled apart by emergency crews and probably did not look this bad prior to that. The drivers door is not just opened, it was pryed open. It all makes sence if you are trying to get to the occupants to save their lives, but trees are going to just slice your car in half, the car obviously stopped before the tree entered the passenger area, but since the stop was sudden, that is where the damage to the passengers came from.
This story is really sad though. I wish for the 18 year old to get better whether he goes throught the rest of his life hating Fieros or not, I just hope he gets better.

It's little hard to tell on the CTV photo. CBC has a photo which clearly shows the split.

Really? You read this and go "perv" without thinking that a 46 yo man could have a 16 yo SON with him in the car. Get real. Im in my mid 40's and have two teenage kids, so I guess when people see me driving my KIDS around they think im a ******* perv.
Grow up.

The article does not say it was father/son. That's why it seems suspect to me.
in fact, the article linked only says that nobody is stating whether or not the driver/passenger are related. So how that SEEMS to me, is suspicious. since they are father/son, I retract my statement; and apologise to everyone for making it. it was based on a lack of information, which has since been filled.

It also does not state gender.
Edit2: it says "where he continues to fight for his life." (didn't notice it referenced to HE originally) again, I've apologised.

WOW! that is the most destroyed fiero i have ever seen. i hope the kid makes a full recovery but if he sat there conscious for all that time with his dead father laying next to he would probably be haunted of that for life.

i wonder if the older man driving had something happen to him as he was driving. a massive stroke? a seizure? i hope the boy lives. im suprized someone surived to to get to the hospital intime with the crash like that. least no one else got hurt. could have been WAY worse then what it is now. could have smoked that house. or smacked a car coming the other direction.
just shows how strong trees are.

I am shocked the son made it out alive. The car had to be moving pretty good by the looks of the damage. But keep in mind too much of this was cut away too. I am sure they pulled the steering wheel up and dash with the Hurst unit and cut away the roof. I have seen less hard crashes and the fire department cutting looks worst than the car damage.
I have seen many Fiero's split in half since 1984. most are hit from the side and they break right behind the seats. I lost a friend who spun out infront of another car on a mountain road. The other car cut it in half back in 1985.
The Fiero is a good car for strenght from the 80's but it too still has it's limits. It is still not a tank and that is something we all should remember when we go for it at times.
I drove away from a hard 40 MPG crash in my Fiero and still have it today. I know first hand what a Fiero can take but it often is a matter of what you hit and where it hits you as to how well it will hold up.

Similar thing happened to a neighbor growing up. He was around that same age, no passengers, on the hi-way going home from work when he had a massive heart attack. Terrible news all round. Best of luck to his son.

If you read the article that Drofseh linked to, the son died in the hospital.
Oh crap, your right. What a shame.
Copied from that link ...
A 47-year old man and his18-year-old son have died after the sports car they were in crashed into a tree in Mississauga Wednesday night.
The crash occurred on Queen Street West in front of a townhouse complex near Shawnmarr Road at around 11:15 p.m.
The older man, a Mississauga resident, was the driver of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 18-year-old passenger — identified by police as the driver's son — had to be pulled out of the car and was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He died of his injuries on Thursday afternoon.
Police said they didn't immediately know how fast the car was going, but it was split in two.
"There were some witnesses and [police] are doing an investigation as we speak," said Peel Police Const. Thomas Ruttan.
Police have not determined what caused the crash.
No names have been released.

From what I recall, a Toronto Doctor was killed when his burgundy SE was cut in half by another car at the intersection of Kennedy and Sheppard back around summer of '91-92 ish . Sunnybrook is a major trauma center, they do amputations etc. Very sad news for the family involved.

Mystik, my respect to you! It really takes a humble man to recognize a mistake was made and you apologized in public. An example to follow!

I've seen bad Fiero accidents where the car splits in half like that. It splits right between the seats and the rear window, but it usually takes an impact on the side to do it, like going sideways into the tree and hitting it with the rear quarter of the car.
