Hello. as i am now shopping around for a new trans for my v8 fiero i find it hard because every time i see 4t60 i see the th440 as well. are they the same trans? if not whats diff about them? i need to find a simple trans for my v8 fiero soon and having a tough time! any info would help.

mine has a 4t60 in it now so i dont think a 4t60e would work because i dont have the wire hook ups. or is there a way around the electrics of a E?

Yes, the 440-T4 and the 4T60 are the same transmission. They were originally called the 440-T4 when they started in 85 as per the naming conventions of the day (like the 700-R4). Later GM desided to rename everything and the 440-T4 became the 4T60 (4 speed, transverse, 60 is some kind of strength or duty rating & higher is better) and this naming convention remains the same today.

As you look for a 4T60, it is best to focus on the 85 to 90 4.1/4.5 cadillac cars or the 3.8/3800 cars. From 85 to 90 any transverse FWD car with a cadillac V8 or the 3800 came with the 4T60. Many of the 60 degree engines came with them as well, but they were phased across multiple years and often times were optinal, making it more difficult to pin down the exact make/model that "will" have one vs. one that "could" have one.

You can not convert a 4T60e to a 4T60, but the original cadillac ecm for your engine could control the 4T60e just fine... but it is probably easier to just buy another 4T60.

thanks for the info! is the 440t4/4t60 the most common trans people use that bolts right in? or is there any other (stronger) trans i can look for. i just need a wide range option because im having a tough time finding a 4t60. all i see is them darn 4t60EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE all over the place.

You may already know this, but the most visual difference between the 4T60 and 4T60E is the end cap. The 4T60 doesn't have one, while the 4T60E has a removable end cap that allows much easier access to the differential.

Regarding the early 90s Cadillacs...
Not like it's likely that you'll run across one, but stay away from the Allante tranny. (The 91 and 92, anyway.)
It's an odd bird called an F7. It's similar to a 4T60, but has some electronic outputs too.
I've read that parts are no longer available.

Also, the 4T60 will have a TV cable. The 4T60E will not.
They both have vacuum modulators, however.

Yep. If it doesn't have a vacuum modulator, then its a 4T65e, which is too new for what your looking for.
