I am concerned that we are jumping the gun and assuming that different materials are not as good as what was once used. There was a comment I read somewhere where someone said that one filter used a spiral spring and the other filter used a piece of metal and that wasn't a spring. But we all know that springs come in different forms and yes, a piece of metal can be a spring. As far as using plastic, I don't have a problem with it. I believe if you regularly change your oil and filter, then even the cheapest mass-produced filter will work just as good as anything else. I would like to see a test of the filtering abilities, not just take something apart and see what it looks like. Anyone know of any filter tests? Sounds like something for Consumers Reports

That is just it. Too many think because they can change a filter they really understand all that is involved. Also because if something is stated on the internet it has to be true! LOL!

Most filters meet or exceed GM and most other mfg standards. There are a few that could be an issue but not many. Being made in China has little to do with this.

Like I said it is best to get some reliable info and learn on this before getting freaked out.

As for Consumers Reports. I don't trust them much. Just my opinion based on things they have rejected or praised in the past that I found not accurate.

Filter failure is ALWAYS possible. It's why I own a filter cutter and open every filter that is changed to inspect it.

P.S. every time you floor the engine, you get unfiltered oil when the bypass valve opens.

I buy WIX because I have never had a problem. I'll stay with them until I see any evidence otherwise.

P.S. many FRAM filters are made by WIX. I have cut open the popular long filter for the fiero that was a fram and it looked 100% identical inside to the Wix filter. 100% identical in all parts, crimps, spot welds, etc....

This is not only a topic here but many web sites

http://www.300cforums.com/f...lters-dissected.html

http://chevyhhr.net/forums/...0032&highlight=delco

Please look at the web site on the 300c forum. A memeber cut apart many filters and shows what is inside. Cutting them open does teach you a lot.
Note how the three Frams are not even close to being alike. It is a good example of how one bad model does not make the other bad.

It is like most things you get what you pay for.

One thing that is not mentioned is how long between oil changes. I have seen some idiots that do an oil change on their cars and do not feel the need to change the filter until the 3rd oil change. If you have enough engine crud plus the filty old oil circulating, I'm sure something will fail. I change the oil in my cars about every 4,000-5,000 miles and have never had a Fram fail yet. Maybe I was just lucky.
